  1. I must admit that I'm a little confused here. Are you all talking about getting healthcare after an E106 has run out, or some other form of social security payment? We are pre retirees who have had an E106 based on previous payments in the UK that has now expired. Our income is from a UK house rental and bank interest that is sufficient to pay our way in France now and will get better when our state pensions kick in. All our income is declared in the UK and France and results in our not paying tax in France or any payment to CPAM (is this CMU?). All we do is follow the rules and be totally legal with our declarations in the UK and France, and to change the situation would require the payment thresholds to be increased to the detriment of really poor people. If this is the perceived problem what can we do about it? Does it mean we are scroungers? At the end of the day we certainly will be contributing in the form of inheritance/CGT taxes whilst supporting the local economy just by living here.
  2. Piprob I live about 20k from Quillan and can tell you that the weather over the whole year has been different for the last three years. Summers very hot or not. Some spring months very nice one year and not the next. Some winters cold and wet with a bit of snow that disappears in a couple of days, except for last winter when the snow hung around for weeks! Trying to read any pattern into it now is very difficult I think.
  3. Ian It's not "adult" in the sense I think you mean! I've not seen much of it but there are a lot of US programmes, West Wing etc and others that have not been on in the UK. I like CH4 in general so will be interested to see how it is over the next few months.
  4. The rule of thumb used to be whether or not you are using the vehicle commercially, ie for gain. If you use a private horsebox for transporting your own household goods you should be able to go at the car rate with add ons for height maybe.
  5. Thanks for the tip, I will try that.
  6. I have a horse with a very bad eye problem and need to get it to the vetinary school in Toulouse next Thursday 29/9 for examination. Unfortunately I don't have a trailer/box available and wonder if there is anyone prepared to rent/loan a trailer/box for a day. I am on the Aude (11) Ariege (09) border and would collect with deposit of course!

  9. Thanks to everyone for your advice. I do live in France but don't want a French licence for trailer towing reasons. Eslier Thanks for your info. I'd worked most of this out from the DVLA site but it all seemed too easy! As it happens I'm going to the UK for a visit on Friday so I will try and organise it all then.
  10. Just ring the various ferry operator's freight departments and ask them for the freight rate for your lorry length. They will give you a cost per metre for a standard type of vehicle.
  11. LG I have the same setup as you but don't have any problems with Alice nee Tiscali.  Why can't you get ADSL with them, is it your address or line etc? My village can't get ADSL yet but may do someday and I would like to change if at all possible.
  12. A while ago my photo driving licence was stolen but I still have the paper part. Looking through the dvla site on this it appears I am going to have a problem replacing it as the address on it was my old UK address, although this could be changed if neccessary to another UK address. Does anybody know the correct way to go about this and in the right order to satisfy dvla bearing in mind that they will not issue a licence to a non UK address?  I assume I start with change of address to a UK address that can accept mail for me, but then what, or can I go to dvla and do it all in one go?
  13. We find that unless it is very cold or that we are sitting about rather than working outside, that 18c/day 16c/night suits us well, anything less at night means it probably won't fire up and then works hard in the morning to get up to 18c when we need it first thing. Given that thermostats will be in different places in different houses I don't think the actual figures mean much, it's just what feels comfortable to you.
  14. We have just done the same but we are getting the new European medical card which takes about 2 weeks to arrive. If they printed the form out is it actually an E111 or some other form? We were told E111's are no longer being issued in France. I'm sure no one would refuse us treatment in the UK but if we are known to be non resident I'm also sure there would be charges without the E111/European card, the same as if we had a problem in Spain.
  15. Yes, points taken. If you have had good experiences then that's fine. I had a bit of a rant yesterday because I have known situations where very unsuitable horses that were very cheap or free, were unloaded on unsuspecting people without them really knowing what they were taking on, and eventually of course it was the horses that suffered when the owners got fed up with all the work and possibly no riding at all for a long time.
  16. As an owner of ex-race horses in the UK and here I would say to anyone considering this, DO NOT DO IT unless you are experienced with horses and prepared to own a horse that has been bred/trained to do only one thing, ie race.  It can take a long time to get the racing bug out and in the case of trotteurs, they are not even allowed to canter or gallop and probably don't get actually ridden at all. To say that in principle these horses would be "perfect for hacking" is just stupid and for anyone not experienced, downright dangerous. It is a sad fact that a lot of race horses are sold for meat when their career is over, but they have usually had a good life when alive, and are probably better off than in the hands of people who do not know how to look after them properly.
  17. Whenever this has happened to me it was either the wrong type of scart cable or one that just did not fit properly.
  18. Anybody watching Rick Stein in the past will have seen him just grab a handful of salt out of a bowl and I think a lot of professional chefs do that. In his new program travelling through France on a boat he refers to the "salt police" so I think he has been got at by someone, not sure who!
  19. There have been, or still are, web sites offering British goods and at first glance the prices were ok, BUT when you add carriage the whole thing is a waste of time. Most Brits here in the south very quickly get used to buying French products even if they are not quite the same, eg beans in very thin tomato sauce, we just add what we want to make them a bit more tastier. Our nearest SuperU now has a British "shelf" but it doesn't have the one thing my wife would kill for, Marmite! I now offer to do little jobs for maison secondaire owners so long as they bring out the goodies.
  20. I have had some bad experiences with cheap paint from the likes of Bricomarche but have since found a supplier called Peintures Gauthier with a 92 area address who sell Robur brand gloss that I have used on shutters, barn doors etc and it seems very good indeed. Their local branch have a computer controlled mixer so the colour range is vast. It brushes on well and works fine with a compressor with a 10% white spirit dilution. It is about €14/litre plus tax. GLH This branch is in Lavelanet so not too far from you.
  21. P I don't regret you starting this thread at all, it made amazing reading for one who bought a house here (11) through a web site run by local Brits for a French agency 4 years ago, in 30 minutes. No survey, moved a year later, did a lot of decoration but no major work apart from bathroom/kitchen stuff, and I have been blissfully happy ever since! Wife ditto . A crazy way to buy property you will say, but it worked for us.
  22. They may not all like Scotch but they are all sure to like Pastis!
  23. I asked a question in a previous thread but it was not answered, so here it is again as I need to know. The AA site appears to only recommend a spare bulb kit for France and I had always thought it was compulsory. Is it? Is there any difference between Foreign/French registered cars in this respect?
  24. Looking at the link to the AA site I see that a spare bulb kit is only recommended in France not compulsory. Is this only for UK registered cars or French too? I always thought it was definately compulsory.
  25. Gas We came to France in 2002 and mistakenly thought that we did not need to declare anything as we did not earn in France except a minute bit of interest in the bank. We have a rental house and a large deposit account in the UK both of which are subject to UK tax so we thought not a problem with the French tax system. Having found out that this was not so we completed form 2047 and the main tax form 2042 last year and sent them in,again to a very helpful man who changed one or two small things and have just received our Avis d'Impot which shows our calculations and zeros against tax to be paid. So, for us, we are properly in the system now and hopefully will have no problems in the future, as our UK income will not rise dramatically.
