1. You cannot offer meals with a gite business. But Quillan is correct I would check the rules to see the differences, although these do constantly change and normally become more demanding. What changes less is the income and I would say its difficult to survive from this kind of business - France is not cheap. In many areas property prices have fallen dramatically. The internet has many established Gites and Chambre d'hote owners who are trying to sell - particularly ex pats.Sorry to sound so negative.
2. I believe If you’re a non-resident you’ll pay tax at the basic rate of 20% on the net income generated in France. If you are resident in France, then any rental income is added to the rest of your income and is taxed on a progressive scale, Also If you are resident in the UK, you will be liable to pay UK income tax on any income generated in France but the double taxation treaty between the UK and France, which deducts any French tax paid against the UK tax liability. I think social charges are now added to this regardless of resident status?
3. We obtained insurance via AXA that covers all our guests (extended liabilty cover). I also understand that new requirements may be in the pipeline if you want protection Incendie in the future ie producing proof of smoke detecors and regular tests - not sure how that will work yet or if its just a plan?

5. Interesting article on gift tax http://www.sykesanderson.com/Service_France/articles/french_gift_tax.asp
6. Read this article just crazy! What next ..... http://www.connexionfrance.com/Bar-boss-Urssaf-illegal-staff-Floch-Mamm-Kounifl-Morbihan-15308-view-article.html
7. Yes it does seem you can be non resident and part of the mirco- bic scheme. We are still in GDF so as former residents we got the 71% but we have had conflicting views as to whether this continues as non residents at the same level. Our accountant seems to think it does not? My understanding is that the higher rate is for rural gites or CDhotes that provide certain services ie linen, greeting etc or those who are members of GDF.
8. I think you can be part of the scheme and non resident but not 100% sure?
9. I have read some conflicting views. But as a Non Resident does the Micro bic abatement remain at 71% as for French residents or does it change to 50%.? thanks
10. France will have to pay more to borrow and to service its growing debt. Its out of sync with most of Europe especailly Germany. The French govt has made none of structural reforms to its economy demanded by bodies such as the IMF. Hollande has no answers other then more tax hikes. Sarko seems a distant memory of happier times? As for the future more hardship.

Problem cat

If your cat is calm and happy at the cattery and the owner loves him then it sounds like the problem is the cat is not happy in your home and by the way you desrcibe him you seem to have had enough. What a shame but may be the solution is try and get him rehomed ask the cattery owner she may know someone.

Problem cat

I have moved several times from city to rural and then back to city. Last move our cat howled lots especially at night and was stressed in the day as well. My advise try Feliwayspray it may help to calm him. If you have ruled out medical issues then your cat is obviously stressed and not feeling safe in his new home. Cats are very territorial. It takes weeks for some cats to settle and in your case he had another move to the cattery as well. I would not let him out, he seems to want return to his old home and territory rather then just being outside.. Letting him out will probably not help and you may risk losing him. I would try and create a space in the home for him separate to the other cats with his own litter and food, give him treats and time and he will settle. Just be patient!
13.
I love France and really enjoy my time spent here, but when I read things like this and most financial and ministerial problems people on this forum have to endure, I'm so glad I spread my time between France and the UK and stay resident in the UK. That way I enjoy the best of both and miss most of the downsides. I find it mind boggling that any government could come up with such a suggestion let alone implement it, having said that maybe they are going to lower the rates and give everybody a rebate. You never know, is there is an election coming up sometime? [:)]
They have calculated a 600 million return on this new tax. I doubt anyone will be getting anything back
14. A new retrospective tax is to be debated by French assembly. 'Savings products underwritten between 1997 and 2012 will undergo a retroactive adjustment of their rates of social security contributions.' Does anyone have more info or an understanding as to what types of investments and savings this would affect and if this applies to overseas accounts http://www.boursier.com/actualites/economie/fiscalite-un-nouveau-coup-bas-pour-les-epargnants-21392.html
15. You may be right. But many people such as UK homeowners recieved incorrectly assessed social charges on rental income, However for many they still recieved their Avis early. Here is the response I recieved to my query: Vous n’avez pas reçu votre avis d’imposition.
16. Still no sign, nothing on line. I emailed in my case the centre non residents and was told two more deadlines for the next wave of Avis sur les revenus,. late October for November the15th and then late Jan for March..
17.

Its not actually Amazon that only makes a loss its the authors of books.
Amazon and loss? Not two words you normally see together. They have a very clear plan and strategy. As for the authors..........they know what the deals are. Bravo to Clair for following the rules, just like Amazon do.
Well here is what some of the authors are saying in one petition. their are others from publishers etc http://www.change.org/petitions/amazon-kindle-e-book-return-policy-stop-allowing-refunds-on-e-books-after-e-books-have-been-read
18.
And here's queenie's opinion on e-books: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2452553/Queen-fears-children-choosing-e-books-traditional-reading.html But just because I am showing this link, it does not mean that that's my opinion![:P]  I am still looking at the research......[:D]
Not sure what is meant by traditional reading. You still have to read on a Kindle or any e book. I suppose you can listen to it but its very automated. You can change the text if the print is small and you naturally contribute to saving billions of trees. Kindles can also store thousands of books. Many classics are also totally free. I recall when mobile phones first came out, people moaned, what do you need that for...now everybody has one!
19.

It's worth mentioning that Amazon has a 5-day return policy on digital books. Any Kindle book purchase can be returned for a refund within 5 days of purchase and I frequently make use of that policy. Refunds are made within 3-5 days of the Kindle book being removed from the Kindle library.
Brilliant, Clair. Exploiting the rules to your advantage just like Amazon do with the tax laws[;-)]
Its not actually Amazon that only makes a loss its the authors of books.
20. I did not just say Paris. Sure France a country of 65 million does have bookshops and book fairs no need to list them. But bookshops are in decline everywhere. As Kindle and tablets become more sophistcated and  books are instantly accessible that trend will continue. What I particularly like abt tablets is that you can read books by amateur writers. I bought a fantastic guide book to Buenos Aires which is only published as a e book. It knocks the socks of most of the published guides like Rough guide or lonely planet. and it cost 2 pounds. These tablets offer exciting reading opportunities.Fance also publishes far fewer books then the UK, no surprise as French usage is in decline globally compared to English.. But  they  also publish far fewer books then Germany, Spain, Iran Pakistan, Russia or Turkey.  E books have been slow to catch on in France only some 3% of the population use them compared to say double that in Germany. But this is changing. Most people will continue to buy books in supermarkets or stores like FNAC despite  all the efforts of the state. Specialist bookshops maay survive ie medical books or political bookshops.  However this legislation will  have no impact on mainstream booksales it will not stop the inevitable.
21. I recall when Amazon opened a new French warehouse, the Hollande govt was full of positive noises abt investing in France. Frankly France seems to have few bookshops outside Paris and some big cities, yes FNAC but in most areas people seem to purchase novels from the local supermarket. I remember visiting Nice and struggling to find a single decent bookshop. The best seemed to be one run by expats selling recycled books.Amazon have announced that the new rules will have little impact as French do not purchase many books online. More worrying is a French suggsetion that a new tax be imposed on these large online suppliers and wait for it they want the taxes to be shared amongst the EU. So countries that spent on online sales will be giving away tax revenue to those that do not.
22. Thanks Christine. I have signed. As you say if people object to my petition yours is even better as its directed at the EU parliament.  As well as stopping the state sanctioned programme we need to stop the hundreds of dogs that are being beaten, beheaded and burnt alive in the streets of the Romanian capital by gangs.
23.
There is a real problem with packs of Romanian dogs even in places such as Bucuresti. The last time I was there a Japanese tourist had just been bitten and died from his wounds. There is an article about the problem here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/10/bucharest-stray-dogs_n_3897750.html
Every year in France people are killed  by dogs. One last year outside our local supermarket but we would never dream of such a cull.  Charities have started a steralisation campaign in Romania and rehoming as well. Probably some do need to be put down but whats happenning is horrific and cruel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVUFfnVeTDQ
24. Still not recieved our Avis sur les revenus. I sent an email to the Centre Non Residents ( this may not apply to all) but I understand they have same schedule for payments as local offices. They emailed back with three post dates: Sept mailout  for payment by Oct15 Oct for payment by Nov15 Jan for payment by March 15
25. Following the tragic death of a 4 year old boy who went missing in a park while out with his grandmother. The boy was found outside the park in a fenced area. The Romanian authorities have started to collect street dogs and some unsuspecting pets some 60,000 to be culled. Gangs are also on the back off this campaign killing dogs and cats on the streets. I appreciate this is not a French thing but if you feel concerned write to your local MEP  see attached for campaign info  http://action.peta.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=5&ea.campaign.id=22720
