  1. I find the tunnel at Folkestone as good a place as any to start
  2. I would have thought you would use both. M4 to Bristol then pick up M5 to go south? Suppose it depends what part of Wales you are starting from
  3. If I were starting again, I might opt for somewhere like Laugharne in South Wales. It's just the thought of all that rain.... Didn't seem to bother Dylan Thomas, though. That said, when not cooped up in his writing cabin, he was in the pub. Yes, that might work for me.
  4. If this long link works, it makes an interesting - and rather scary - read: https://www.tortoisemedia.com/2020/12/15/alastair-campbell-the-23-year-old-book-that-explains-brexit-and-beyond/?fbclid=IwAR1u6upSQgJavtnwRCHc96vqq3qDcT1l5PTuVHB7rFVNl5dAuer6XsPaGas
  5. I found the will writing formalities in France to be surprisingly straightforward for my circumstances. I wrote out my will - in French - signed and dated it (no witnesses required) and emailed a copy to the local notaire. She responded a couple of days later to say she had read it, that it did what I required and was a perfectly valid will in France for my French property. Job done - at no cost. As in the UK though, much depends on your situation. Complex assets or complex family situations would most likely call for professional involvement/drafting.
  6. They stamped your bike in our village when you took the Cycling Proficiency Test. At least I managed to pass something.
  7. I quite like Macron. Britain needs someone of his calibre to start a new party with a clear direction. There is no effective opposition at present. Corbyn was unelectable and Starmer upsets those bankrolling the Labour Party if he says what he actually believes.
  8. I'm embarrassed now to admit that I cheered when Blair was first elected but this support gradually turned to contempt as his hypocrisy began to show itself. But to compare him with Trump or Boris is like comparing Mother Theresa with Satan. Boris now bathes in the glory of getting Brexit done, no matter now bad it is for everyone except the Rees-Moggs of this world. Brexiters will laugh when the UK doesn't fall off the proverbial cliff in January, unable to understand that it will just be the beginning of a steady decline as the full implications of higher costs and worsening relationships work through. My main worry when the referendum result was announced was not so much on economic grounds as on how the UK and Europe would see each other in future. When suggesting the idea of a United States of Europe, Churchill saw it as the best way of reducing the grounds for conflict after coming through two World Wars that started in Europe. For all its faults, Brussels provides a platform for governments with common interests in which the UK has had a say. Thatcher (and Blair) realised the importance of this but weak Cameron came on board too late and was no match for the hard right. Let's hope that when things start to go wrong, French people do not take it out on British ex-pats. History shows that foreigners are usually among the first targets. Brexiters - encouraged by the atrocious UK media - will of course blame Europe, in particular "the French".
  9. Nice one, Norman. Enjoy - whichever of those you succeed with :)
  10. No pudding de Noel included? :)
  11. I would second the Octavia (estate). Recently bought one, having owned Alfas. I needed something capacious to replace my van. Apart from practicality (enormous space), I have been really impressed with comfort and how it drives. Great reliability record and cheap as chips to run. Still like my Alfa 159, though. Completely impractical but just has something a bit special about it. Has also been surprisingly durable/reliable.
  12. That will upset British Airways https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-55114365
  13. No doubt Trump's locked-up mates can't wait for their pardons. So much for justice.
  14. The all-powerful religious brigade wins again. I'm no great fan of Corbyn but free speech no longer exists. Disgraceful.
  15. Have only visited once, many years ago, and all I remember is that we were on the ring road for about 3 days before we found our exit.
  16. A problem, of course, is if you challenge one religion, you have to challenge them all. Which is why they all put up with the existence of each other. Difficult to see how it will ever change, particularly with the churches so infiltrated within governments and international religious protection policy.
  17. People scared to say what they are thinking for fear of similar reprisals. And afraid to say anything against religion in general due to the ridiculous bullet-proof protection given to it internationally. Thousands of years of civilisation and so-called advancement but still dictated to by superstitious codswallop.
  18. "This thread is sponsored by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in conjunction with the French Tourist Board"
  19. Scary, isn't it? I recently viewed a car that was being sold by a local dealer. I noted the address of the previous "owner" and managed to find her on Facebook. She was a young woman who told me she did not even have a driving licence and has certainly never owned a car. I passed on the details so that she - or her parents - could take things further. It seems there had been something previously that had made her suspect that her identity had been stolen. I didn't buy the car....
  20. "More gîtes/B&B's yogurt pots stuck in a tree type businesses close down every week than any other business." He can be irritating as Hell but sometimes you have to laugh. :)
