1. Thanks everybody for your help. We had tried the hypermarkets first but were looking for somewhere with a larger choice. It was interesting to learn about PC CIty - unfortunately not one near us at the moment but we will keep an eye on their site. Viking Direct have been a big help though, as we have been able to buy a part for our existing printer, which we thought was beyond repair. Thanks again Hazel
2. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent outlet to PC world in France, if so what are they called so that we can check if there is one near to us. Our printer is on its last legs (can't complain, its around 5 years old) and we're thinking of buying one of the new 3 in 1 types which incorporate scanning, printing, etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Hazel
3.
Hi On Freyjabear's recommendation, we used the kennels for our Japanese Akita when we went back to the UK for Christmas. He appeared extremely well fed, (which pleased my husband, who had put him in...
Thanks Freyjabear and Jooles This extra info is very reassuring - we will definitely check the kennels out by visiting but it sounds promising. Thanks again Hazel
4.
We use M Dubois at La Tourtaire, Le Clos du Chataignier, Terves. 0549725136. Between Parthenay and Bressuire
Thanks for the reply we will probably give them a call and arrange a visit one weekend and take our dog with us. If theres any other info you can share with us that would be helpful, i.e., do they have covered runs so that the dogs aren't left out in the rain? Do they walk the dogs once or twice a day? Anything that you think important would be helpful. Thanks so much, will post a reply on how we get on. Regards Hazel
5. Does anyone know of a good kennel around Poitiers/Parthenay or within a reasonable drive of either? We have had one 'not so good' experience with a french kennel near to us and will definitely not be trusting our dear old beagle to anywhere like that again.  We're also going to ask our vet if he can recommend anywhere, but it would be great to hear from anyones personal experience on this forum as you're more likely to be basing your judgement on English kennel standards. Looking forward to helpful replies as ever. Thanks Hazel
6. Hi All We're renovating our salon and as there is an existing chimney which we can open up, we would like to install a fireplace. We have seen plenty of brick/block type cheminees that you could house a wood burner in, but we are not looking for this type - we want an old fashioned fireplace with a mantelpiece. I've done a seach on this forum but not come up with anything, so if there is anyone out there who knows a supplier, or salvage yards perhaps, that do this kind of thing we'd be grateful. We are in dept 86 between Poitiers and Parthenay so anywhere within an hours distance of us ( to start with) would be good. Looking forward to loads of helpful replies as usual. Thanks Hazel
7. Thanks John It was kind of you to take the time to give us such a comprehensive reply and to explain your situation. We are not going to be setting up any kind of formal business ourselves, but merely have a small holiday cottage that we hope to let out through advertising etc. In your reply you covered our situation very well and it has underlined what we understood we needed to do. We let our Maire know right from day one what our intentions were and he has been informed of all the work we have carried out to renovate the cottage, he tells us he is very happy that we run a holiday cottage in our village. The suggestion you made that we inform the   hotel d'impots of our intentions was a very good one and is something we will do early in the New Year. Thanks again for your help, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy and successfull New Year. Regards Hazel and Chris
8. John We'd be grateful to know how your registration with the local Tourist Office went, did you have to prepare anything for them, did they visit the property etc. Also, we've been told (by an expert!!!) that whatever else you do, you have to register with Gites de France as well. We have heard so many conficting stories, so it would be good to hear of your personal experience. Any advice you can give us would be gratefully received as we are about to register our holiday cottage now, in preparation for the new year. Many thanks Hazel
9. We bought this book (recommended in Living France magazine) before moving to the Vienne and it has been invaluable, even the artisans who've carried out work for us have looked up things in it when we've wanted to be absolutely clear. Details are:- 'Glossary of House Purchase and Renovation Terms' 'French-English and English-French' Published by Hadler Pager ISBN  1 872739 08 3 Hope this helps Hazel

After E106

I would be really interested to hear how this works out for you and what you have to do. My husband and I are in exactly the same boat as our E106's run out at the end of January 2005 and we are currently waiting for our letters from Newcastle to say this is the case. Keep us posted, and good luck. Hazel
11. Still have my BF brochure so I've looked up hotels in Normandy and found this one near to the ferry port in Caen (Ouistreham). Hotel Normandie - 2 star - few minutes on foot or by car from the ferry. BF say its simple accommodation but the hotel is renowned for excellent cuisine. Prices are £22. per room this time of year. Hope this helps. Hazel
12. In theory this should be a good way to travel, but its true that Guernsey can often be fog bound. We lived there for ten years and cant tell you how many aborted trips we had because flights couldn't get off the island, same problem coming back to Guernsey by air after trips away. The fastcat service from Guernsey to St Malo is excellent, but this used to stop to pick up passengers at Jersey (don't know if it still does), so is a longer journey than you would think. So all in all, not a practical way to travel if you only have a weekend to spend in France, although if you had more time and the weather were good it would be a lovely trip. Hazel
13.
Speedferries , which operate between Dover and Boulogne, are offering an incredible offer of: £50 Return for a standard car + six passengers. REGARDLESS OF THE LENGTH OF STAY!!! ...
When did they start to allow pets to travel? We recently had to go to England urgently due to a family illness and cancelled our booking with Speedferries because we couldn't take our dog with us. This is great news!Any more info on it? Thanks Hazel
14. Sorry that this hasn't been of use to anyone, we have now contacted Speedferries who say we can put the booking on hold for a year which is what we will do. Regards Hazel

16. If there is anyone on the forum who would like (or needs) a Dover/Boulogne crossing in October, we have one available. We had booked to go back to England but due to family illness, and problems with kennels here in France we have had to cancel our trip. Rather than lose a booking completely, we wondered if there is anyone out there who could use this, we only ask that you pay the booking amendment fee of £10. if you would like it. The original booking is with Speedferries, for a car and two passengers,  Boulogne/Dover on the 15th October at 14.00, returning Dover/Boulogne on the 19th October at 11.15 We have had so much help on this forum we thought it might be of help to someone. Please let us know. Hazel and Chris
17. Sorry Pantouflard - Don't know what happened to my last message - just your quote appeared!!! Thanks, this was really helpful, have looked at the website you suggested and will order direct from there as they have maps which are just what we're looking for. Thanks again Hazel
18.
The Institut Géographique National is similar. They are available in 1:25000 & 1:100000.
19. I have searched the site for reference to these but to no avail. Can anyone tell me if there is an equivalent in France, and where you would obtain the maps? Although its pretty clear locally which paths we can walk on through the fields, it would be nice to suggest longer walks for our guests and to provide them with a copy of the relevant map. Looking forward to some helpful replies as usual. Hazel
20.   We ourselves have only used local artisans as some of them are from our own village and we thought this was fair, but I have met many English people who have been looking for English plumbers, electricians, etc, as they are not confidant that their french is up to dealing with local artisans. I would say that there is plenty of work for an English plumber here in depts 79/86, and although It might take a little while to get established, I think referrals would quickly accelerate your business. However, there is loads of good sound advice on the forum about the difficulties or complications of starting up your own business here, not to mention the expense, so I would read through all of that as it will help you in making any decision. Good luck with whatever you do. Hazel
21. Penny - This is a horrendous state of affairs and I wish I was able to come and help. Thank god that people like you care enough to do something. Please, please, let us know how it turns out. All the best Hazel
22. >4)When you lose a friend, even >if it is 'only' an >animal, the grief is overwhelming. >And there is a hole >now that can't be filled. > > >Thank you for reading this, it >has helped me writing it >and I hope my warning >will prevent someone else this >sad situation. > >Kind regards, >Belinda Dear Belinda I read your message tonight as I was surfing the net for something to occupy me, because yesterday we had to have our dear friend (dog ) Reggie put to sleep as his cancer had become too overwhelming. Your story touched my heart, and I noted your point about 'only an animal' but know exactly what you mean. In my experience our animals have been true friends, loving us whether or not we were successful, or beautiful, or anything else, they have always been pleased to see us for no other reason other than they love us. What more could you ask! We're mourning our old friend tonight, and out thoughts are with you also. Sorry if this message sound a bit garbled - but a sad time for us too!!! Love and best Wishes Hazel and Chris (and remaining dog Reggie)
23. >We are here.............. after what seems >like months of planning, thinking, >worrying etc, we have finally >arrived in the Dordogne! > >> >Liz, Iain, Pippa and Harry Abbott > Liz, Ian, Pippa and Harry How wonderful that you've realised your dream. We arrived in France about 18 months ago after planning for 2 years and it has been everything we could have hoped for. Good Luck to you all and very good wishes. Hazel & Chris
24. >does anybody know if there is >a swimmingpool in partheny(79) Yes - there is a swimming pool near to Leclerc supermarket on the outskirts of Parthenay which is an indoor pool, but there are other outdoor pools that we know of in the area (depending which side of Parthenay you are). If you can provide a little more information we may be of more help. Hubbie (Chris) is off to the indoor pool tonight for the diving club meet! So there are lots of different possibilities. Let us know if we can be of any more help. Hazel
25. I used them to transfer most of our money to our french bank account, found them very helpful and got a beter exchange rate than the bank was using. As with all financial companies they need to know the ins and outs about you ( to make sure you are not money laundering) but I would recomend them. regards Chris.
