1. To put the word in context, I had an x-ray on my foot and the results says 'that a small element of bone on the "metatarsien" corresponds to a "sésamoide".  Can anyone tell me what this means please? I have tried all our dictionaries and none really cover medical terms. Thanks in anticipation Hazel
2. My wife has the fuller figure and she managed to buy some nice clothes from La Halle, which is a french version of primark. 3 items for under 50euros bargain.
3. Ian. the language may be different but the diving is the same, once you get to grips with the new names for the same equipment you soon get to understand what is expected of you. Also its a case of comfortability in what you know, if you are serious about taking it up again, I would advise joining a local dive club to refresh your knowledge. I was lucky that one of the club members speaks fair english and another guy had a dive terminology manual translated from french to english which he photo copied for me. Hope this helps. Chris
4. Sorry to hear about your dog, we had to have one of ours put to sleep last year, our vet was very helpful and arranged for his remains to be collected, cremated and his ashes sent to us in a decorative container. ( cost just over 100 euros) We live in dept 86, but i am sure if you speak to your vet he will know of someone who provides this service. regards to you all. Chris
5. Jane I also am an advanced padi diver, I live full time in france and joined a local french dive club in parthenay. Its very difficult as i don't speak much french but they are a great bunch of people. The main problems i have come across are that the french don't recognise any other dive qualifications except there own. With regards to diving this year we have had a trip to Handaye near Biarritz, and also a weekend trip to the Isle d'yeu close to Nantes, both of these places had there own dive shop/centres. I also saw a dive shop close to the marina in La Rochelle, but don't know if they do dive trips. Tried to look for padi sites in france on the internet to no avail, also looked for French FFESSM which gave a bit more information.   I wish you well with your search. Chris
6. Thanks for the replies so far, answers to some questions. The sat dish is attached to my chimney on top of 2 story house, higher than any trees in garden. It was put there by gitem a company that specialises in tv installations. Internal ariel cable put in by previous owner( I am going to have to check this out for bad connections). Sat dish erected in fine sunny weather. regards chris.
7. At the moment I have a 60cm sat dish and single Lmb, conected to my old sky digibox. During sunny weather I can only recieve bbc1, itv3, sky news and a few other not worth watching channels. However when it rains I can also get bbc 2, 3+4. Any Ideas on how to rectify problems, also if I changed my mono lbm for a dual lbm would it increase my reception. Could I also move sat dish slightly to recieve signal from hotbird sat, and if so would my sky digibox decoad them or recieve clear free to view signals. Totaly confused and in need of help/advice. Chris.
8. I've been looking at the web site Su recommended which is updated regularly - look for the latest date column for your region. This has been really helpful, as far as I can see there are no formal restrictions in department 86 for households at the moment, but we can see that the situation is becoming critical so we are using our washing up water for essential plants and veggies and being conservative with our use of water generally. Hazel
9. Thanks Ian for your reply which was good advice, but our local Marie were unsure of the position and our local prefecture is half an hours drive away which is why we were trying to find a web site to look at. We are going to check out the web site that Sue (I think) suggested. Thanks all Hazel
10. Does anybody know of a web site that gives the current rules regarding watering restrictions (or otherwise) region by region. We are in dept 86 and locally we are getting very conflicting advice. Really we just want to make sure that its ok to water the potager, etc, or otherwise!! We have looked in the local papers and asked our neighbours but with no definitive answer. We'd love to see this officially somewhere to make sure we're doing the right thing. Thanks Hazel
11.
This facility hasn't been removed. It might be that you are using a different browser or added a firewall to your machine which is why it is no longer showing?
Thanks for the reply. This is truly bizarre as we have changed nothing at all on our system! Any other ideas what it could be as a few people seem to have the same problem. Thanks Hazel
12. I had noticed that the PSMLV had disappeared recently but thought it was only temporary. I always use this, selecting posts in the 'last 48 hours', and there is no substitute for this within the current options. 'Active Topics' aren't complete, they miss several forums which actually have current responses on them. Please admin, can you let us know if and when you are going to reinstate the PSMLV facility soon, as trawling through everything is too time consuming and not really an acceptable alternative. Hazel
13. Dear Nicola I have been following this thread every day hoping that you'd find your dog safe and well. My heart goes out to you today as its incredibly sad to lose a family pet that you've had as a friend for so many years. We're thinking of you - Bon Courage. Hazel and Chris
14. Thanks for taking the time to reply, it really is interesting to see such varied opinions. We have also been taking a straw poll of people we know and the general opinion seems to be that you have to advertise somewhere, and Brittany Ferries/Owners Abroad reach a very large section of the market and most peoples experiences/enquiries/bookings have been good. So, we are going to go ahead with them and will let you know what our experiences are. Thanks again Hazel
15. Thanks Miki This is exactly the sort of honest answer that we were looking for. Brittany Ferries are asking for just under £500., so we have to weigh up all the pros and cons. It'll be interesting to see what other responses we get too. Regards Hazel and Chris
16. We'd be interested to hear other users experience of advertising with Brittany Ferries - Owners Abroad and whether you think the expense is justified because you have received a good number of enquiries, or bookings or not! Our small gite is now ready for this season and we are looking at all the ways to advertise it with Brittany Ferries being the preferred option at the moment. If we sign up for next years brochure now, we will be put on their website for this year free of charge (plus next year too in case anyone asks). We'd love to get your opinions. Thanks in advance Hazel and Chris
17. We bought our sand and gravel in 1 ton bags from M.Bricolage in Parthenay. You could look on Pages Jaunes to see if there is a M.Bricolage near to you. They charged 35 euros to deliver to us and we are around half an hour away from them. Hope this helps. Hazel
18. Well - we went to the Hotel des Impots this afternoon and the lady was very helpful. She found us on her system and confirmed that we would not have been asked to pay tax d'habitation in 2003 as we did  not own the property until 24th March that year, apparently the criteria is that one has to be resident on the 1st January of the year being charged. She also confirmed that there is no bill for us to pay in 2004, which is the same as Ron and Chrisb have found, but she said that this may change after our tax returns have been submitted for this year. So it was a worthwhile trip and we feel comfortable this evening that there are no tax bills of this nature that we don't know about/or haven't paid. If there are others on this forum who are in doubt - its probably worth checking it out with the authorites in question and getting some peace of mind on the issue. Thanks for all the advice and info. Hazel
19. We have filed a tax return for 2003 and expect to file a tax return for 2004 very soon as I understand the paperwork is just about to be sent out by the hotel des impots,  but as I said before we have never received a tax d'habitation bill. To get a definitive answer for our own situation we are going to the tax office in Poitiers this afternoon, so we will post a reply about our findings later on. Hazel
20.
The Taxe d'habitation bill comes on a form that looks virtually the same as the Taxe Fonciere being collected by the Tresor Public. The other local bills water, sewage, and rubbish come in a variety ...
Thanks for the reply, its obvious that you get two seperate bills for 'tax d'habitation' and 'tax fonciere', which answers my original question. We have only ever had the 'tax fonciere' bills from the tresor public and in the 2+ years that we've lived here in France we have never received any other bills for 'tax d'habitation'. Who sends your 'tax d'habitation' bills to you if you don't mind me asking, maybe its something we should follow up on with an office somewhere in our region. Especially as we have recently been asked to provide copies of 'tax d'habitation' bills to someone as proof of our permanent residence here. Hazel
21.
"usual annual bills from the Marie "What does it say on these bills ? In our area these are the taxe d'habitation.Hoddy
Hi Hoddy We have 2 bills from the Mairie the first says 'assainissement' which we understand is for the village cleaning service, and the second says 'redevance pour la collecte et le traitement des ordures menageres' which is for our local garbage collection service. Neither of these bills has the wording tax d'habitation anywhere on them. Hazel
22. I'm also confused about 'tax d'habitation' as we've never had a bill of any kind that actually quoted that wording. We have had bills for 2003 and 2004 from the tresor public for 'tax fonciere' though, can anyone confirm if this is the same thing please. Just for info, we have also had the usual annual bills from the Marie for local charges. Hazel
23. Nice to know I'm not the only one who is getting excited about spring!! So far I have noticed that our forsythia has some flowers already out, our beautiful old flowering cherries (6 of them) have masses of tiny buds about to burst. We have had a lovely show of crocuses already and the other bulbs are in various stages of growth. The recent heavy frosts seem to have done a bit of damage to some bushes in the garden buts its amazing how they recover. Looking forward to the next few weeks as every day brings something new. Enjoy Hazel
24.
We just filled our oil tank yesterday and the price was .395euros per litre, we are in the commune of Cherves (dept 86). This seems most unreasonably cheap. Are you sure that you aren't leaving out...
Dear Mazan I knew once I got my confidence up enough to enter into discussions on this forum rather than just reading them, that I'd make a blunder and someone would notice it!! You're right I did not include the TVA - didn't realise that everyone else was including it in their calculations. However, its still not bad news as the price on our latest delivery was .472euros per litre including the TVA so I think it looks like we did get a good deal from our local man. Hope I've redeemed myself! Hazel
25. Hi Philip We just filled our oil tank yesterday and the price was .395euros per litre, we are in the commune of Cherves (dept 86). It was interesting to see that the last time we filled our tank up it was .416euros per litre so we obviously have an honest supplier who really reflects the true price of oil as it has gone down this time. Welcome to the forum, you will be amazed at the amount of help you can get here! Regards Hazel
