  1. They exist! We have a mobile library that comes round once a month, if there is demand they will stock books in english, otherwise very like the old ones we used to see as children in UK, but French! Suze
  2. Have you invested in one of these and does it really make ironing sheets any better. Anything I should look out for models etc. The only one I've seen locally is a Singer in the sewing shops. Suze
  3. Depending on your area, in Limousin I think your occupancy figures may be a little optimistic, do you have a speciality to offer? such as fishing or haute-cuisine? The maximum number of room you can have is 6 and/or no more than 15 people in total before you are classed as a hotel and come within different rules.   4. Bottle them in syrup or preferably in alcohol and then they are there in the cold winter months as a reminder of the summer. Mirabells were in short supply here (Limousin) this summer - late frosts I think. Suze
  5. B&B is unlikely to provide a familys main income, it can be a very useful additional source. To make more you would probably have to have 5 plus rooms and then you are looking at being more in the region of an auberge and subject to hotel regs. How ever many rooms you have you will not get 100% occupancy, so you need to have a realistic idea of the likely traffic through your establishment. You are likely to get a better rate of occupancy the more rooms you have to offer. Price is area dependant; we charge 45 for a large double en-suite room + brekkers (norm for this area 35 to 45), in south Fr I know they can get 65 upwards for the same thing. 15 to 20 seems to be the going rate for a meal. You should price according to costs especially for the meals; we have found it isnt worth trying to compete with restaurants, you are after all offering a different kind of service. If theyre going to quibble about an extra 5 or so for a home cooked meal, let them go to the resto. In fact here these days they would be lucky to get an evening meal at a resto for less than 20 a head with drinks. If you get the cheap licence for Table d'hote you can serve and charge extra for drinks, and so increase your profit! If you intend to register with Chambre de commerce and if you are seasonal only then you can de-register at the end of the season and re-register each new year. Suze
  6. Welcome You seem to be well on the way to thinking of the potential problems that in itself is a good thing. Check out the forum on B&B, Gites and earning a living in France there is some useful information. If you didn't buy a licence with the property and intend to run a bar/resto do a bit of research, the commune might have one to sell, or if you need a new one be prepared to pay quite a bit. If it's just for your own B&B clients it's cheap. Suze

If you have a few rooms, are registered and have a business account in France then why not apply for a credit card machine and take deposits over the phone immediately - money arrives in your account next day. Cost from Credit Agricole 26euros a month for the machine plus 0.9% on each transaction, machine needs to be insured but just declare its value to insurers and it's included with general contents. You can accept cards from all over the world - not everyone wants to pay in sterling.
