  1. I have had a Flex a/c for a long time. I 'phoned the number on the original letter. The lady said I couldn't upgrade but then said I could once she redid the credit ref check. Later in the conversation she also said that I had had a debit card some years ago. I vaguely remember changing to a cash card at some time as that was all I needed. Perhaps that had more influence than the credit check - I don't know.

I recommend you 'phone the number on the letter (don't mention going into the branch) and ask to upgrade. If they say no, then ask why not.

    Good luck,
  2. I can shed some light on this after having had a long conversation with Nationwide.

They have credit scored all flex accounts with Experian. If yours fails, you get the letter and the " Card +". If it passes you get the upgraded or "full" Flex a/c with  a card that lets you withdraw cash. I could not believe that I would fail a credit check, knowing my past credit record, unless the French address alone is enough to tip it. However, the lady on the 'phone re - did my credit score there and then and surprise, it passed and I was upgraded. I don't know why and the lady at Nationwide cannot see any details of the creit record - they just work on the Experian rating, with no appeals procedure, even if, like me you have had a trouble free a/c for ages, their credit card and significant investments with them.

  3. I asked them if I could pay by direct debit a couple of years ago and they said no. Then I tried again more recently and initially they said yes but they then came back to me and said no.

The reason I wanted to do this, apart from convenience, was once having sent my cheque off well before the payment date, it was delayed somewhere and was only cleared with 2 or 3 days to spare. (They normally bank it on the day of receipt).
  4. Although I live here permanently, I have been asked by a friend to help with a Ligne Résidence Secondaire. Looking at the online form at the link here, they ask for details of your main address. I thought that this implied that it needed to be in France.

For those of you successfully using the service, what did you enter in this field please?

PS the link doesn't seem to work so here it is in full

  5. I've read it and it looks good to me. However, as I cover all my direct debits by getting cash from the wall with my Nationwide card then paying it in to CA, I can't get round the problem of needing a separate bank account too as I would then have to send a French cheque to ING monthly - a bit of a pain.
  6. A lot depends on whether your income is in Sterling or Euros. Mine is in STG so I put everything on my Nationwide CR card and settle the total by direct debit monthly. If your income is received  in Euros in France it makes sense to have a French debit or credit card.

  7. Richard, without sounding like a hypercondriac, which I am not and in case you don't know, an eye test is also a good health check. The condition of blood vesels in the eyes is a very good indicator of the condition of the rest of your blood vessels. I know this through the requirement to have an annual eye test as I have diabetes. As far as dentists are concerned, again it is not just the teeth they look at but the health of your mouth in general, including looking for signs of mouth cancer.
  8. Thanks Stan - that is an interesting post. It confirms my feeling about the independent firm we used in the UK. However, it is still hard to understand the huge difference in their prices as compared with the internet suppliers, despite the latter's lower overheads. The variation in frame prices is such that one can only assume there is an excessive mark up somewhere (excluding so-called "designer" frames which I don't even look at). It can't just be about quality as I have never, ever had a problem with "low end" frames.
  9. Our Super U have stopped issuing bons - you now just ask the cashier to deduct enough points for your €10, €20, €30 reduction etc.

I obtained my first LeClerc card today, it says that you may lose your points if the card is not used for 14 months.

  10. I have had a query from the Impots regarding the amount of interest the Nationwide reported and the amount I declared. It was a small error on my part and was painlessly resolved but it shows that UK banks do report - whether in all cases or just at random I don't know but I personally would not recommend taking the risk.
