  1. I should just do one for him; he will then stop worrying you.
  2. Doesn’t sound like the Tours so often recommended by albf! i spent a month there in the summer of 1958; it seemed pretty quiet then…
  3. I've heard it being used in English, back in the day : "On the qui vive"
  4. I seem to recall these hollows in the sand are called "bâches" in Berck-sur-Mer - the first place that I had heard of them. ( I don't know what they are called in English.) And just today I read of a small child that was rescued from one by a teenager off the coast of Wales.
  5. Agreed about the DPE just being for info to the buyer. But the (separate) septic tank report can possibly be a bit of a bargaining tool. If the fosse is declared "non conforme", in theory the purchaser has 1 year in which they must replace it with a new system, so possibly could get a bit of a reduction based on the assumed cost of that. But, in practice - and I am afraid my experience is a little out of date, as I sold some six years ago - the notaire is likely to shrug and say that nobody will be checking, so don't worry.
  6. Well I suppose it does have it all, really, mint. It's a big country, so hot in the south, cool in the north, wild in Brittany, high in the mountains. Plus the French are convinced that their food is superior to all others. So, unless they are interested in culture of other countries, why travel further? One sees a lot of Belgians and Dutch, as well as Brits, on the French roads, but very few Italians or Spanish, so maybe inhabitants of those other large countries feel the same?
  7. I was given a bunch of the smoked garlic once. The bunch had a delicious smoky smell, but I don’t think it affected the taste, as far as I recall.
  8. Oh dear, wish I had looked for them last week when I was actually in France…. I am not sure we have such things here in London, though perhaps if I try some super-duper food hall I might find some.
  9. How would I recognise a sweet onion, svp? Those recipes sound so good!
  10. Great to see you back, Teapot!
  11. I had exactly the same problem as you, Menthe, with my aging Panasonic. Eventually, I am ashamed to say, I scrapped it.
  12. A big obituary in Le Figaro https://www.lefigaro.fr/musique/mort-de-jane-birkin-la-plus-anglaise-des-chanteuses-francaises-20230716
  13. Back to the identity thing... i had to prove myself to a UK solicitor's office recently. The usual passport had to be uploaded, then not only facial ID, fitting myself into their on-screen oval, but then I had to turn to face left, then right, and finally say "One two three" out loud. Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better, mint.
  14. Maybe the lovingly made card was bigger than a normal one, and packed in something more like a Jiffy bag than a standard envelope?
  15. Oh Mint, I am so sorry to read about your falls. They sound very scary. I always had you down as such a fit person. You certainly need some scans to find the problem. Meanwhile, have you got a stout walking stick? Oh, I think you have walking poles don’t you? Maybe those would help - though I suppose it would be hard to carry anything if using them. Do take care…
  16. Blimey, Macron's cancelled his trip to Germany now. Didn't King Charles's trip to France get cancelled not long ago, too? The Foreign Office is advising Brits to think twice about going to France at the moment, and to make sure they have good travel insurance if they do. That's a bit of a laugh, seeing that insurance usually exempts anything to do with war, riots or civil disturbances...
  17. Bon, Soyons Bien Bénévoles?
  18. I tried googling to see if it existed in France, but all you find are colour consultants who advise on decorating your home. I think it is an unknown concept. Some friends who moved to France and tried out a knitting business swiftly found that their local French were totally fixed in their colour requirements for clothes - never mind what might have actually suited them: winter: red or black spring: pale pink or yellow summer: navy blue or white autumn: russet or sludgy green
  19. Never been to one, but seen their distinctive architecture everywhere.
  20. Poor parenting, but also drugs - either committing crime to obtain the means to buy them, or the perpetrators being off their heads because they are already on them.
  21. You were lucky with the four course meal Lehaut! The only time I did a few hours as an (unpaid) extra, I had to make a bowl of vichyssoise last for four hours…
  22. Wow, looks amazing! I think the "Arbre aux Hérons" was to be a creation of the Machines de l'Ile? I remember seeing sketches of it ages ago, when visiting the Elephant etc.
  23. Wow, how amazing! Is that the garden opposite the north side of the station?
  24. It is indeed awfully difficult to work out how much time you have remaining out of your 90-day allowance at any one time. I can't tell you anything about how to obtain a visa, I’m afraid, but somebody recommended to me a brilliant app called “Schengen Calculator 90/180”, into which I enter my arrival and departure dates for each visit to a Schengen country, and it calculates how many days I have remaining.
