LAST EDITED ON 27-May-04 AT 09:06 PM (BST) Hi there ... after a few too many wines and many meetings the boss of the donjon in bourdielles has let me start a musicians workshop on thursday nights, starting on 17th of June. Its for singers and guitarists etc to come along give us a tune and sing a song... meet lots of other musicians too.. I am running it with a good friend so we will be kicking off the evening with a few songs... and keeping it flowing.. A PA is there along with a keyboard and mic's etc... just bring your guitar.. Would love to see some of you there..we do need a lot of support.. and the good news is that if it goes well we can keep it going all year.. what else is there to do in Feb??? phil
  3. LAST EDITED ON 05-May-04 AT 10:11 PM (BST) Hello all... I was wondering how Gite owners were managing on such low KW's of electric... We are trying to use Gas where possible but how do you stop your guests from using the tumble dryer, washing machine, dishwasher, playing music with all the lights on and making a cup of tea at the same time without it all tripping out. Anyone got any good tips... Phil
  4. I was wondering what the law would be regarding an above ground pool given that its sides are already 1.30m high and are relatively flat and impossible to climb??? Locking the ladder is an option... Anyone any thoughts or news on this? phil ( who hasn't got round to building the pool yet )
  5. If you miss live music you might like to know that I am starting a musicians workshop in a hotel in Bourdielles starting in June. Hoping to attract all the local musicians to get up and do a bit. It will be running on a weekly basis. Should be fun phil
  6. I have heard that french mortgages are at a far better interest rate and a friend has one fixed at 3.8% for 15 years. Thats what I call a bargain... phil
  7. Hello... I was wondering weather any of you satalite users were able to get and Scandinavian TV.. Our family is two parts Danish so to keep our daughter's Danish up to scratch we would like to be able to see some Dansk TV. Swedish TV would also be handy. I wait in hope... Phil
  8. Wheres the column that use to tell us how many people have veiwed our post???? Come back where ever you are... phil
  9. I was lead to believe that the lights and sockets etc for the bathroom had to be on their own dedicated circuit/fuse. Is it true then that the bathroom light ( in ceiling ) can be a spur from the lounge and bedroom lights for example??? And the same for the socket which I am keeping a long way from all water anyway. Can this be a spur from say the lounge and bedroom supply too?? I know that the hot water is a seperate issue etc. While I have your attention is it true that I can have 8 bulbs on a fuse and 8 sockets from another fuse providing that its not for heating elements?? Answers on a postcard to...... Thanks phil
  10. hello again..... I am wiring my houses at the moment. One has three bathrooms. I know a bathroom need a special supply but can I run more than one bathroom from that supply... Trying to keep the fuse numbers down. I look foward to the answer i feel I already know.... nothing is easy...is it ? phil
  11. Hi there ...again I am wiring my houses at the moment. One has three bathrooms. I know that a bathroom has to have a special supply. My question is can I run more than one bathroom from the bathroom supply. I am trying to keep the fuses to a reasonable number. Cant wait for the answer I feel I already know as nothing is easy is it.... Phil
  12. Not in your area sorry... but 7,700 euros is very expensive.... phil
  13. LAST EDITED ON 23-Mar-03 AT 11:03 PM (GMT) At this stage of my renovation I should know everything...but there is one thing I am having trouble with... I have some floorboards that won't come up without a fight which will break them and so I have kept them and sanded them down and they look great..really great. The problem is that when they were put in they were obviously green wood ( new cut ) and they have shrunk. I now have up to a centimeter of gap between a few of the boards and I want to fill them with something that will not crack a week later. They are a light wood and I am sure it is poplar.... Any ideas? Theres over 100m2. phil...PS I am loving this sun.
  14. You can treat for woodworm yourself quite easily...its just a boring job. All bricomarche's sell woodworm and termite resistant chemicals...get yourself a small spray gun and you are away. If you do it yourself it will cost peanuts but make sure you soak it well... over rather than under do it... phil
  15. Thats a bit of a big question.... A lot depends on where the building is...If you are in view of an historic building like a church you could be in for a lot of waiting... However if your floor area is less than 170m2 then I believe you can get away with a small chat and a glass of wine with your marie. As for time well pick a number and then double it.... phil
  16. I have to say we knew the lady and that we knew she had sold the barn before we talked about beams... She was so embarrassed ( is that spelt right ...I wonder ) she came round with the money within half an hour of hearing about it... I think she was genuine unlike the inspector... phil
  17. Sorry there aren't any reasonably priced electricians in France....
  18. I heard through a friend that a lady a few miles away had sold a barn and that there was some old beams in the barn. After a long chat with this lady we agreed a price for the beams. She told me during this chat that the barn was now sold and that the man had been to test for aspestos ( I can never spell that ) and termites etc as part of the sale like we all had didnt we.... Anyway I got the beams home and as i was unloading them I noticed a crack in one so I cut it only to find that it was infested to the hilt with termites... 9 days after the inspector had been... Whose not doing their job properly then???? Fortunately for me I was unloading the beams away from my buildings and right near a blazing bonfire we had burning. So I grabed a jar took some samples to get my money back and sent the termites straight to heaven....cremation seemed appropriate. So... whose had a termite inspection lately... Rest assured..it means bugger all. Sorry....phil
  19. I have also heard that if you do get a grant from GDF then GDF set the price you can charge therefor making your gite affordable to the french people who will not pay what the Brits and the dutch will pay...... I was told this by an estate agent in Normandy. He was a Brit so it could be rubbish.... phil
  20. Thank you to everyone who has answered my posting.... I must just say I am not a builder and at the end of the day I dont want to be a builder. I do not want to set myself up in business either. I just want to help other people and earn a few bob whilst I wait for the following summer to come along as I am too late to open for this summer. I wanted to work for 2 or 3 days a week just to put bread on the table and stop me spending the second half of my budget which is intended for my house renovation. I dont want to step on anyones toes I just want to labour for someone and of course if I can help with some know how I will. I renovated a cottage in the UK and now I am renovating 2 more and a house for us to live in so I have a lot of know how. If you need help for a relatively small fee...then email ME... [email protected] Anyone can visit my works here in Dordogne and see what I have done or in the middle of doing to be sure that I do know my stuff. Its as easy as that...
  21. I have been in Dordogne for 6 months renovating my house and a big barn into two cottages. We decided to do the cottages first to be ready for this summer but alas we have not made our target and it seems we will have to open later... Not a big problem. However now that the rush is off and we can take a little more time getting things ready I am looking towards maybe taking on some part time work so as not to eat into the budget we have set aside to renovate our house while we wait for our income to start.. I am not a builder by trade however there isnt anything I haven't done from roofing to electrics whilst here in france when turning the barn into cottages. I was wondering weather there was anyone out there who was tempted to take on a job but thought they might need a little help and muscle... If so many hands make lighter work. As I said I am not a builder but incredibly handy ( you can visit my work )and armed with everything from a Kango to a cement mixer the works...so if you need a little help for a little fee.... email me... [email protected] I am inbetween Riberac and Perigueux and dont mind travelling up to 75km.

  24. Hello there I am to believe that you must wire totally in the french way... No UK method or sockets or switches to be used. You cant cut corners. If you do then your insurance will be invalid if something happens.... Go and Buy "pas a'as electric" It will tell you what to do. Its about 8 euros at the bricomarche. Good luck Phil
