  1. I am a keen FC Bordeaux supporter (live nearby) but I am trying to find out why Lens have a Union Jack flag on some of there supporters team flags? The flag was at Bordeaux last night 29th April. Anybody ot there know the answer?
  2. I am looking for a reasonably priced simple hotel/b & B in the centre of Pau for the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June 2007. One twin room required. Can anyone help?

  5. Simon, I have been running a salt water system for 4 years now. I liked the sound of it and thought it would be more friendly all around. There are lots of pool owners out there who have salt water systems which run very well, alas, mine seem to be a permanent challenge. Salt water systems are not automatic, I am always testing various levels. You need to be a chemist to be on top of it. There are no less chemicals in my pool house than any other, hydrochloric acid, eua de javel (choc), cyanuric acid, bicarb of soda for example. And salt, yes the salt, I have put in 16 x 25kg bags this season, some of that might be due to winterising wher I dropped the level. That is a lot of salt, itr is heavy and bulky, and at between 6 to 12 euros a bag, not exactly cheap. And as to the enviroment, that is another issue, apparently one is not allowed to discharge salt water into the water table, which makes for some problems. When it is running well it is fine, but I would not recomend my salt water system to a potential pool owner. I will be changing to a direct injection liquid chlorine system when I can afford it. Hope this helps.
  6. Andrew and David, Sorry for the delay as I have been in the UK for a week, but thanks for your replies. I have now managed to find Cyanuric Acid on its own, but it is known in France as "Stabilasant" or similar.
  7. I am trying to get hold of some cyanuric acid, every pool shop I have visited just wants to sell me liquid ph minus, of which cyanuric acid is often a small component. But what I cannot find is the stuff itself. I have an auto ph regulation system and I make my own ph minus liquid with hydrochloric acid and water 25% to 75% water. Many thanks.
  8. Tim, I know the shop, and will check it out, so many thanks to you.
  9. The two thirds return after 3 years statistic has been around for a couple of years now. As far as I can recall it came from a leading UK currency broker. So it may include holiday homes which is not quite the same. Like the rest of you, I think this seems a very high figure. In this are people have returned, but nowhere near tho thirds.
  10. Ian, I do not think it is a software problem, I put the same post on the Western France forum as well, to which you kindly replied. Cheers.
  11. Here in the Charente Maritime our two children aged 10 and 8 who are at Primaire go in for 3 hours on a Saturday morning. Although when they go up to college they do not, but go in on Wed mornings, so much ferrying and collecting etc. And we will have one at each in the next couple of years. Ideally they would all have weekends off, but after 4 years it is surprising how one gets used to it. Every 3 weeks they get a free Saturday, which is to do with the teachers 35 hour week. There is some evidence from educational pschologists that children learn more in the mornings. Historically the day off on Wednesday was something to do with children being able to attend church, so it does seem a bit odd considering the we fact that we are supposed to be in a secular society that this practice continues, mind you, if we applied that theory then we might lose all our public holidays as they are also linked to the church.
  12. Ian and Lynpy, Many thanks for the responses and ideas.
  13. Greetings, I have just purchased an electric bass and amp, but I need a teacher or experienced bass player to help me out. I live in the Charente Maritime 17 near to Gemozac. I would prefer an English speaking teacher. Can anybody help?

  15. I will not comment on the tax and legal implications, but what I will advise is that if you are looking to rent out a place and you live in the UK, then the most important thing is to have someone who is reliable and trustworthy who can take care of the changeovers, cleaning, gardening, etc etc.
  16. Sue and Pete, To save Poolguy's time, the answer is yes, you can, I am in the same situation and I am about to do the same.
  17. Mayenne, I agree with Phil about doing a search on this forum first. This is quite a very popular question on this forum. You will get lots of different opinions. Not all sites are the same, for me, Chez Nous although very  big do provide me with a lot of business, but they do cost an arm and a leg. A lot of people have had little success with them, also their customer service to advertisers is a bit lacking. They hae a brochure and a website, but the deadline forthe brochure is August the year before. I also use the free sites, but to be honest most of them are a waste of time. Good Luck.
  18. I have owned and maintained beechblock worktops in the UK and France for the past 17 years. Initially I followed the advice of oiling them at regular intervals, but got fed up with that and dicovered that if you use a good quality polyeurethane varnish it looks just as good and lasts a lot longet than oiling. When it gets scuffed and scratched, just a quick rub down and another coat does the trick. If using varnish after oiling you must first remove all traces of oil
  19. I agree with Blanche Neige, I think you may find it difficult, I will PM you with a link to someone who may be able to help you out, reason being we stayed at the same place in the summer of 2003 for 4 months when we property hunting.
  20. Barkham, you are a lucky guy, I have had a salt water system since 2004, and if I knew then what I know now I would not bother with salt at all. I have had lots of problems. When I can afford it, the I am going to get one of the direct injection chlorine systems. Also, I can only commend PoolGuy's input on this forum and advice he has given me, yes he is in business, but he does know what he is talking about, unlike a lot of us novice pool owners, who he is trying to help, although I know a lot more now.
  21. Milims. I agree with all the previous posts about getting your kids into the local school. Does one of you already speak French? the reason I ask is that kids get a lot of homework and it does help a lot if one of the parents has a good understanding of the language. Going off the tangent, you say you have not bought a house in France yet, may I suggest that you try and find a long term let first, we did, and it does make it a lot easier to find the right house, area and schools. Looking on the internet is one thing, but you really need to spend some time looking, Anyway, Good Luck.
  22. Bugbear, Once again you are missing the point, what I mean when I mention road engineerring is not  just the condition of the road surface, I talking about junction layouts, white line systems, speed limits, etc etc and the ergonomics of the road system. In other words road layout design. The French are way behind in that dept, the UK has one of the lowest road death rates in europe. The original point I was trying to make is that cats eyes are an aid to road safety, I make quite a few early journeys in the darkness and cannot understand why they do not have them over here.
  23. Bugbear, Point taken, but you are missing the point, in general road engineering in France is way behind the UK, cats eyes have been around for donkeys years, and are generally considered as a cheap low tech aid to road safety. So why have we not got them in France?
  24. Having lived here for over four years, and visited for more than twenty, I have noticed that French roads do not seem to have much time cats eyes. I live in the Charente Maritime 17, and I can only recall one road with the said items. If the French goverment are so keen to reduce their awful road safety record, then surely a simple road engineering project like installing cats eyes would go a long way. The UK has a lot of them, and I think they are a good idea.
