  1. Sorry, someone always loses, Paris, the people in Stratford, etc. But I'm chuffed that the UK has got it.
  2. So roast leg of lamb with oven roasted vegetables may not go down well?  You said it eating veg. is a sign of poverty - would it indicate we're poor, or give them the impression that we think they are poor and used to eating veg?  I never thought it would be so difficult! Perhaps a traditional fish pie, there's no way they can split that down into it's separate bits and serve it separately!
  3. Despite the criticism, thanks for the tips, I think traditional may just work. However, I have had a disaster in trying to roast a joint of beef here, so may stick to the leg of lamb and shock them with the mint jelly I've got stored away in my pantry!  I can always make a Yorkshire pudding, but I too like them savoury - do you think they'll stick around for a dessert?
  4. Ok, no point in flogging a dead horse, I guess I'll have to keep my blood until I'm in a country which accepts it.
  5. Oh no, I lived in the UK ALL of the 80's - does this mean I'm excluded?
  6. We've been here for one month and this coming Friday (9 July 2005) we're hosting a dinner party for our neighbours!!!!  A couple with 3 daughters aged 15, 12 and 8. What on earth would anyone suggest!  Any help gratefully received.
  7. No I'm not talking about the punch up oustide your local - I guess French hospitals need blood as much as the UK ones, how do I go about giving blood here in France?
  8. I thought I'd already posted this, but I can't find it on the forum, so feel free to delete this if it's already out there. The question: How much did you pay for a COC? Citroen gave us one for free, whereas Fiat are charging 120 euro's - don't get me wrong, I'm not breaking Forum rules and saying who is good or bad, just a question... has anyone else come across this, it would be interesting to know which car manufacturere is the most expensive, and cheapest.
  9. We imported our Saxo last week with no problems, however looking at the paperwork which we've got, I've noticed that they took our original COC - is this normal?  I only ask, because I'll be needing it again in 3 years time if I re-import the car back into Holland in 3 years time.  We've a second car still to import and if they don't have to take the original COC we'd like to hold on to it (as it's costing us 120 euro's!!)
  10. It seems to be a failure in French system that they allow cars to be tested without a French registration, ensuring you had to have this or supplying some sort of temporary test certificate for import purposes only would be a good idea. However, I've no complaints with the system - we got through it no problem and had our car tested and registered within a week. Don't worry I've got the extinguisher next to the computer for when I'm shot down in flames!
  11. For those who are menopausal and wondering why they've put weight on I found this info... Causes of weight gain There are a number of factors that may contribute to the weight gain associated with the menopause, namely: lack of female hormones which slows down metabolism use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) slowing down of basic metabolism with increasing age lack of exercise increased food intake due to emotional problems such as depressionIt then goes on to say what can be done to tackle each of the problems... http://www.health24.com/dietnfood/Weight_Centre/15-51-89,16389.asp I guess sorting my weight out prior to the menopause isn't enough, I've a whole new struggle ahead!  No wonder I feel like I spend half of my life dieting.
  12. Ladies, I can't offer advice from experience, but I found the following link which is all about dieting during the menopause and may be of use to you.... http://www.annecollins.com/weight_loss_tips/menopause-2.htm In turn though I do thank you for that extra push to get my weight in order before I reach the menopause.
  13. Morning all, Jan, sorry to hear of your predicament, it's awful when you have a what you thought was a good week, only to put weight on - perhaps after a while and once everything has settled it will all go better for you? I've been as good as gold this week, stuck to less than 5g of fat per 100g (except a couple of reward packets of crips - oops!)  Wine has been the downfall though - but I think I've tackled my lack of willpower by removing the offending item from the 'fridge! Down to 78.9kg today, that's 2kg down in 9 days - 1 week left to get that 900gms off and hit the first goal.  How are you doing Lorna?
  14. Hi there, not sure if you were replying to my message or not as you seem to have started a new topic, rather than entering a reply.  However as you're mentioning kids and 79 I'll assume it was aimed at me.  We're very close to Niort, an estimated half hour away .  Let's get something organised!
  15. We agree with you, the fun part is getting the certificate of conformity - but once you've got that you don't have to visit the DRIRE and after that it is straightforward - just make sure you have all the correct documentation when you visit the prefecture. Good luck. Anyone got experience of importing a motorbike - now that's a different story!!!!
  16. Ok, so we're now French registered, and the documentation says that my car has a puissance of 7 - apparently this is the taxation level.  So what does this mean?  Do we have to pay something annually/monthly based on this? Sorry if it's already been covered, but I'm one of those who can't get round the Norton problems, so I don't have a search bar and am unable to find info. Thanks (and as my OH KEEPS saying 'Importing was a doddle')
  17. Just an update to say my car now has french plates!  The OH did it all, but he's singing the praises of the French system as he found it totally hassle free!  Although we've been here 4 weeks, we only started to ball rolling on importing it on Monday of this week.  He picked up the dedouane-thingy yesterday, had it tested (MOT equivalent) this morning, and registered it this afternoon. The motorbike has proved a problem as the capacity needs to be reduced before it can be issued with the right certificate.  As for the OH's car, we're waiting for the COC (which incidentally is an extortionate 120 euro's from Fiat - mine was free from Citroen)
  18. Not sure if there's any interest, but after giving a book which I'd read away to someone on another forum, I came up with an idea.  The person who I was sending the book to, offered to cover the cost of postage, instead I suggested that they just send me a book back which they no longer want.  The result - for the price of posting a book to someone you get a new-to-you book in return. Anyone got any books they would like to exchange?  I can start the ball rolling with" Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason' A spot of deja vu there - got a strange Saturday Swop Shop feeling!
  19. Thanks for the information.
  20. No one?  There must be others living in Western France with children?
  21. Hi, I can't recommend anywhere, but I tried a search in www.pagesjaunes.fr , entered beauty parlour and Charente Maritime and it brought up lots.  They may not all do waxing, but I did see a few which mention 'epilation' in there treatments so you may be lucky enough to find one.
