  1. Ok so I did it... 79.3 kgs Pleased to be under 80 still, but there's a long, long way to go.  Got to keep busy, off to do some ironing.
  2.   Today's the day, the beginning, off to a good start, but I've only been out of bed 40 minutes    Waiting for the bathroom to get weighed, will report back with my starting weight later.   Here's to a good diet for everyone.
  3. Anyone know anything about the huge bright orange slugs which are dotted around the floor of woods and forests here in France (79, Deux Sevres to be specific, although I guess they are all over the place). Not normally a slug fan, but these were interesting, and my 11 year old visiting nephew convinced himself that they must be poisonous, not that WE were considering getting that close.
  4. I'm all for starting again, I begin a diet, stick to it for a short while, drop 5 kgs, stop dieting and put it back on again - just can't stop stuffing my face!   But I really, really want to be slimmer.  Has anyone tried one of the self help books, cd's?  I know the easy answer is eat sensibly, but I'm hopeless.
  5. You didn't state if you were looking for the UK holidays or the French holidays, nor for which area you were looking for.  However to get you started, here in 79 (Deux Sevres) the holidays for 2006 are as follows... 10 Feb - 27 Feb 14 Apr - 2 May and 4 Jul onwards (no return date given yet)
  6. I can't answer if it's possible or not, but bear in mind that some medicines from the UK aren't available at all in France - i.e. different brands of contraceptive pill.

    Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Hi, We're a Rhodesian Ridgeback owner, living in France (79), although our dog wasn't purchased in France. There is the French Rhodesian Ridgeback Club, who have a website which is also published in English, this will give you some contacts who can probably give you more information about the breed here in France. The link... http://www.cynelevage.com/CLUBS/R/RhodesianRidgeback/RhodesianRidgebackENG.html They're still very rare in France and ours attracts a great deal of attention wherever we go.  Some are drawn to her, and others afraid when they see her ridge that she's about to become aggressive.  Good luck.
  8.   I can see your point, but I think the previous comment regarding registering the baby in the UK was referring to one of the parents doing it while in the UK.  Obviously if you all have to go over in 3 months time, and neither you or your partner are considering a trip alone prior to this, then the only option will be to go through the British Embassy. Good luck.
  9. We dropped our little girl off this morning, and nerves dictated that she needed a toilet stop.  Although I loathe the open plan system, which has a 2 metre open wall with corridor running past, I'm pleased to report that not only her pockets were stocked with tissue, but there was a plentiful supply in the room. No soap on view, but there were towels.  She's a bit obsessed with washing her hands after visiting the toilet, so I can already picture her telling the other children they MUST do it, at some point today!
  10. I agree it's expensive at approx 200 euro's, but if we had given birth in the UK we too would be in the same position as the French people here, being able to register the birth and get a certificate for next to nothing.  We move around though, so I wanted the security of our children being registered through the British Embassy in their country of birth - to avoid possible problems at a later date. The high costs are a very small price to pay for the bonuses of living here in France though.
  11. It's really got me thinking this one, so I've decided that as my little one will be wearing a dress with pockets, I'm going to send her with a couple of sheets of tissue paper in each one, that way if she forgets to pick some up before sitting down, she'll not get too stressed.
  12. Our soon to be 4 year old, will be starting school for the first time on Friday.  We visited the school prior to the summer holidays beginning and being in a new place she insisted she needed the toilet.  We went with her and it wasn't until she was sitting down in the on one of the open plan toilets that we realised there was no toilet paper.  There was however a dispenser on one of the walls.  We've told her that when she goes to the toilet she'll have to get a piece of tissue before sitting down - although she's bound to forget.  Ask your children to take a good look around to see if there's a dispenser in the room, but not necessarily near the toilet.
  13. I think you answered your own question there then.  If your car has an valid MOT, road tax and your insurer will cover you for the period of time which you plan to leave the car here, then I don't think you'll have a problem.  I can't see it making a difference to if you were actually staying here with the car and touring for the duration of it's stay. I could be wrong, but it sounds ok. I can see where the other comments came from though - it really annoys me when I pop to our local airport to find all the Brit registered cars without tax discs.  Can't UK road tax inspectors come over and check the airports here - they'd make a killing!
  14. It's the OH's birthday and he wants to take something sweet and yummy into work to share around the office staff, I of course have to make it!!!  I've been trying to think of something tradionally English that they would enjoy - but am struggling. Anyone with a really simple, yummy recipe for a sweet snack or cake that will go down well?  Time's against us on this one as I have to make it tomorrow evening - AND all the ingredients have to be readily available here in France. Thanks.
  15. Errrmm while on the subject, what can I expect for 130 in a 90?  It was just after midnight and I reached a restricted part of the road.  I got flashed (face on), then slowed immediately and passed the next camera at below the restricted speed (some 500m on from the first).  I've only been here a couple of months, still have a UK licence and was driving a hire car at the time.  I already know the best case.... it was late, no other traffic, not picked up on the second camera, hire car - forget it (OK, so I'm being hopeful) But what's the real story?
  16. Hi  - we imported two cars no problem, one a UK model and the other a Dutch one.  For the Citroen we didn't buy official Citroen lights, but a good alternative and that saved us a lot of money - but import on both vehicles was very easy, taking up only one morning, this included the MOT equivalent. However we're now looking to buy and my OH has found Germany to be the best option, LH drive, good prices and ok, we'll have to pay to import it, as we did with the others, but it won't come anywhere near the price of buying the same second hand car here in France. As for warranty - we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that we don't have to call upon it, although we are buying from an official dealer, so it may be transferable?
  17. Back from my holidays and thought if I was good while I was away there was a chance I could have reached 75kgs by this morning - ha ha ha!  The truth - 81 kgs  aaarrrgghhh.  Must admit there was no dieting at all though, so it's my own fault. Got to get started again, thinking of giving Atkins another shot as it worked before and is good for a quick encouraging start at least.
  18. We thought we didn't take a chance on the cheese, we went to the deli and asked for good selection of cheeses for after dinner.
  19. Got to be the quote of the day... "Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out. But I can usually shut her up with cookies"
  20. It's better off than on regardless of the amount!  At the moment it's probably more like to be fluid loss than fat for me, hopefully if I continue I'll start to see the benefit, but I always find it much easier to put it on!!
  21. Morning - back again after a pretty bad week.  We entertained the neighbours so I've eaten well outside the diet!  However I'm down to 77.5kg this morning so it's still good news. This is the last weigh in for 2 weeks though as we'll be in the UK - oh no, I sense the lost 3 kgs sneeking back on even as I think about our trip! What's the goal for 2nd August Lorna?  (75kgs?)
  22. Ok, I worried and worried, so much mixed advice.  But in the end I went with my gut feeling and cooked English food.  Stuffed Mushrooms to begin, witha light salad and dressing, roast leg of lamb with oven roasted vegetables, gravy and mint jelly and for dessert melting chocolate puddings with whipped cream.  All served on separate plates, bread plate provided and a selection of glassware. We've either got very polite neighbours or they actually enjoyed it all - the only failure was cheeseboard, I was the only one who touched it. Mental note never to serve that again. As for the wine, we played safe and asked a colleague to recommend something for each course.  Few can now breathe easy until our next crackpot idea!
  23. We've only been here in Deux Sevres (79) for a month, but I took at quick look at an estate agent's site and found 37 houses under the 80,000 euro mark, so finding a house isn't a problem.  Not sure about employment possibilities in the area, but there are a lot of people in expensive new builds, so there's money somewhere!
  24. Decision made - I'm going to ask for her only to attend mornings when she initially starts, then see how it goes.  I know I'll regret it when she's driving me up the wall on the afternoons at home - but I already feel happier now that I've decided against full days.  Let's just hope the school agree to it!
  25. Hi - we just registered our daughter a couple of weeks ago, and the schools are now broke up for the holidays. Here in Poitou Charente, they return on September 2nd which will be her starting date. Our experience was different, and it may be that yours too differs, so for information... We phoned the local school and made an appointment to meet the head.  She took a note of our daughter's name, date of birth, our names and address (we provided no proof of any of these).  She asked if we'd be bringing our daughter or if we'd like to use the school's transport, asked if our daughter would stay for lunch, or go home and asked who would be collecting her from school.  She then showed us around the school and finished off with - see you on September 2nd. That was it. No contact with the mayor, no birth certificate, proof of address, vaccinations or anything. Finally, although our little girl won't be 4 years old until October (approx. 6 weeks after starting school) she's expected to go full time from 9am to 4:30pm all week expect Wednesday when she'll be finishing at lunchtime like the rest of the school.
