1. I've not used a flash drive for ages since I've signed up for google drive, dropbox and skydrive. Have almost 30gb of stuff between the three. I don't think it took more than a few hours to upload, but it wasn't a big deal, I just left my computer on. Those speeds are already here. However, I do agree with you if either his or his friend's isp is not up to it. But we don't know, which is why it is an alternative option. Anyway, he's going for the flash drive method, so fair enough. I wonder what Chromebook sales are like in Europe then. If there's no infrastructure for cloud use in place, then I guess they will flop there.
2.
YES, someone gets it! as ANother points out, upload and download speed are NOT the same. I pay for a 2 meg connection, which gives a real world 1.2meg download on a very good day (more like 400 - 500k most evenings, and occasionally just stalls away to zero - the joys of living in the countryside where the telecoms network consists of a series of broken old grey boxes along the roadside, most of which are hanging open with the birds nest tangle of wiring exposed to the elements) , but upload is only about 100k. at absolute best Uploading 64gig+ at that sort of speeds.....I would be quicker driving to the shop, buying a memory stick and going to the friends house and swapping the files physically. As for ease....method 1 - friend plugs stick into his computer, drags n drops the files, hands me the stick, I go on holiday, plug the stick into the telly and thats it done. method 2 - i research which cloud storage provider gives the required storage capacity for free. I sign up an account and pass the details on to my friend, who has never even heard of could storage. They get it though and start uploading at a painfully slow rate. I go on holiday and find that the net connection is less reliable than a 70's BL car on a cold morning. I download the files in fits and starts onto my computer. I still need to get them to the TV though, which requires a memory stick.......... Cloud storage has its uses, and one day 20 years from now when everywhere has super-fast connections, not just those who live in cities, then it will be great for this sort of thing.
I understand the difference between upload and download speed so you don't need to be patronising. As I have already said, the cloud is great if he has the speed to do it. Nowhere has he said he doesn't have the speed to do it. I also assume he would be watching said movies on his laptop. Most tvs do not have usb ports. And of course the biggest advantage the cloud has is he doesn't even need to go to his friends to get more content. But carry on putting down another viable option.
3. Of course you need an internet connection for cloud. The majority of people do have it. If not, then it would probably be cheaper to rent or buy said movies than physically going to his friends house to copy them. If both have decent internet connections, cloud is much simpler and quicker.
4. I really don't think the authorities will be too concerned about half a dozen movies. Plus with the cloud he doesn't even need to go round.
5. If both do have internet access, it's simple. Google's cloud normally allows about 7gb of free storage. Upload 7gb of movies from one end, share with the other person, and then once downloaded at the other end, delete, upload the next lot and repeat. And what copyright problems would exist using the cloud as opposed to a memory stick?
6. Open up a dropbox or google cloud account and put them up there.
7. I was thinking about exporting my little Peugeot 206 convertible to the US when I made the move. A car like that over here would be seen as something quite different and neat in comparison to the hairdresser's car it's seen as in Europe. When I started looking into it, it would have cost me a fortune in the changes needed to make it roadworthy in the US. If the EU is supposedly more strict on emissions, why would my car have needed to be changed? Would have loved to be driving around here with a car that did 38 mpg in comparison to mine that only does 22 mpg.
8. Don't forget a second mortgage as a US car in Europe will cost a heck of a lot in gas! :)
9. Like a tennis match this. After watching Obama's address last night, it's anyone's guess as to where the buck lands next.
10. I've always struggled tiling. Do not enjoy it in the slightest. That and plastering. Can't do that either.
11. Most oil for the US comes from Canada now. If the EPA loosen up a bit, then oil could be drilled again here. Would be wonderful not to have to rely so much on the Middle East. I think the next big thing that the world will fight over will be water.
12. We've no business going in anyway. There's no threat to the US. There's no threat to any neighboring countries. This really shouldn't be on any agenda anyway. Nothing different going on in Syria as there is in many African countries.
13. Another classic Bill Maher observation "The executions by rebels I read about yesterday - SO much better than gas! Yes, lets back these assholes. Why? Because we're the good people!"
14. I think if someone really wants to get into a mail box, they'll find a way, key or no key. Over here, no mail boxes are locked. I guess there are certain neighborhoods where they are though.
15. I think she should have stood this time instead of Obama to be honest. It might be too late for her by 2016. Too much damage done.
16.
I think you will find they are all pretty much the same once they get in to power.
Sadly, this is probably the truest statement in this thread.
17.
The point is really whether the candidate can understand the different needs of the people, or appeal enough to to what they perceive as being the common denominator. Can Mr Christie ?
Who knows? Obama clearly can't.
18.

So to be able to vote, everyone needs to travel the entire country to understand every facet of American life? Doesn't make sense.
If that were a legal requirement to vote in the UK then the electorate would be much reduced. The different parts of the UK have relatively little understanding of how people in other areas live. Just look at the so-called North-South divide as an example.
Exactly. Every voter votes based on their own needs, their own culture, and own perception of prospective leaders and parties. That's the whole point in democracy, the populous comes together collectively and votes based on their own needs, beliefs and perceptions.
19. So to be able to vote, everyone needs to travel the entire country to understand every facet of American life? Doesn't make sense.
20. Maybe, maybe not. He's still in a very high pressure job now as governor of NJ. I'd certainly vote for him, he's one of the straightest talking politicians I've ever known.
21. I remember watching a Top Gear episode and it had James Blunt as the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. I vaguely remember them joking about so called "green tanks". The way things are going, war is going to be very PC one day. Maybe that won't be a bad thing. As long as both sides abide lol.
22.
Richard your starting to leave your intelligence behind and become another American drone (no pun intended Wooly). It is right he 'dithers', this is a massive decision and he should listen to all advice and not just Kerry's. More importantly he should listen to the people, you know, those who put him where he is.
I think my dislike and distrust of Obama affect my opinions of things he does (and doesn't do). Please accept my apologies. I'm counting down the years and am hoping Chris Christie runs for president. Although run might not be the best word in his case.
