  1. I don't think the livebox will support a USB printer.. just USB memory devices, but the quickest way to be sure is connect it to the livebox and see if it appears in the connected devices. If it doesn't work, the piece of kit you need is one of these... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VONETS-VAP11G-WIFI-BRIDGE-FOR-SKY-ANYTIME-XBOX-PS3-/230629580185
  2. I would not be too sure that there will be enough room to solder the cells together.I chose a different route when three of my cordless drills started suffering with duff batteries, I replaced the NiCd or NiMh cells with a LiPo pack of equivalent (or very close) voltage, just opened the plastic battery holders, cut out the old cells, retain the connector, and purchase the biggest capacity LiPo pack that will fit in the available space, check out hobbyking (for example) for masses of modellers packs. You will need a new charger, you can get good series chargers now for LiPo packs quite cheaply that balance charge through the series connector, so just make a small hole in the battery casing and leave the series connector outside the pack. The only drawback is that, in use, the drill will not shut off before the pack is exhausted, and that will be detrimental to the battery so at the first sign of the drill slowing down I put the pack on charge. New life for old power tools....
  3. My understanding was that you can suspend the phone but you cannot suspend the ADSL broadband. I have bought a USB 3G dongle for 1 Euro from orange, along with a 8 Euro a month abonnement for 100MB per month. This is without a minimum term. Further 100MB top ups are available for 3 Euros if needed
  4. WPS pairing is 8 digits on a Livebox. You will need to look at the wifi configuration page in the livebox to see what the code is. And for the outgoing email from an ISP that is not your own, try inserting port 587 in the SMTP outgoing server port. It is fairly common to trap outgoing port 25 to reduce spam
  5. portrait mode for screens and printers usually refers to the screen or paper orientation - portrait = larger height than width landscape =larger width than height
  6. Read the contract for the penalty if you go over the 60sms/60 mins a month just so you know what to expect if you do.
  7. There are many blogs about connecting your xbox360 via a VPN to access country restricted media. There are two basic ways, if your router has wrt firmware then you can setup the vpn at the router and all nodes connected to that router will access the VPN, or you can connect your xbox360 to a pc running the VPN software via a cross-over cable to its local network port. (you might need to add a second NIC). This should allow you to stream the media in real time.. http://www.bestvpnservice.com/blog/ps3-vpn-xbox-360-vpn
  8. He's having another go so that those of you that missed it first time around can catch up!! http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2011/12/03/jeremy-clarkson-train-suicides-controversy_n_1126869.html?ref=uk
  9. The obvious one....caps lock? failing that... give it a day or two, perhaps the pop mailbox is down/being serviced. failing that..password may have been changed, either accidentally or maliciously
  10. It costs a shed load more than £600 for the equipment that can access any failed drive and recover data. The swapping of the pcb of a faulty drive with a pcb from a working drive is often not successful and in those cases professional recovery is the only option. In business £600 would be considered peanuts to recover business critical data. I'm not sure I would want to sending my private data to a cloud storage server..encrypted or not - give me a local solution any day. I use sync'n'go for day to day backups and Acronis True Image for longer term stuff.
  11. I see that android smartphones are now attracting the attention of the miscreants, no-doubt due to the exponential growth not only of the genuine articles but also of the cheap Chinese copies and their hacked firmwares. Every system will be targeted as soon as there is a perceived return.
  12. >>I have also failed to get the Kindle connected to our own wifi, the help pages say press a certain button on the livebox - can find no button to press .. sagem 1.1 and Kindle help again no help. If it is a Sagem 1.1 I assume you are with Orange and this page http://assistance.orange.fr/livebox-sagem-fonctionnalites-1309.php will help you identify where the button is that you have to press in order for the livebox to accept the connection with your kindle, scroll down to' les boutons', the one you are after is 'Association'. After pressing the button you have 10 minutes to complete the connection. You only have to press the button the FIRST time a new device wants to connect to the livebox, subsequent connections are automatic and seamless! As far as hotspots are concerned, I have never used them but you may have to go into the establishment and obtain a key still...they may be free but still secured..perhaps someone who has used a kindle in a McDo could comment.
  13. If it is something you might be doing more than once I would suggest you take a look at www.currencyfair.co.uk, register with them, register a sterling and a euro account and you can swap currencies between them at or very near to the interbank rate and it costs 3 euros per transaction. It seems to take about 3 or 4 days for the money to complete its journey
  14. For those of us that are French resident.. From their T&C's.. You can apply to open a Current Account if you are 18 or over and a UK resident.
  15. In the case I quoted, the sums involved were quoted to me by a notaire during my investigations as to what would be the best way to proceed in the purchase, in joint names, of a main residence. No extra work involved I'm afraid. ..So not sure why there is an apparent disparity....
  16. The cost of making the two wills was, IIRC around 100 euros, the remainder was for the donation entre epoux.
  17. 1/ watch out for excessive roaming charges. 2/ http://maps.mobileworldlive.com/network.php?cid=123&cname=France Lycamobile - when I enquired about buying a top-up from two different UK companies on-line i was told a UK Lycamobile top up wont work in france with a French Lycamobile sim. I eventually found a tabac that sold the top up and all was well!!
  18. Thats interesting....I only get share/copy Ah-ha.....just found out why....I get the delete option when logged in, but I never log into my account though! I just add photos to my profile without logging in.
  19. I think you will find that once you post your private pictures on photobucket they are no-longer yours!... try deleting one! The ipad adverts dont close if you click on the red cross, they open a new window, but you can close the new window without it multiplying...its best to just ignore the advert. I would suggest you download one of the excellent FREE anti-virus programs like AVG or AVAST, or even Microsoft Security Essentials Here is a link to one of my pictures.. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd452/dart1680/sataide.jpg. Can you see other pictures in that album?
  20. another + for Lycamobile - except I am possibly one of those "having problems topping it up". I did eventually find a tabac that sold the top up cards & my usage will be such that 10 Euro top up should last me six months. I have to make one charged call or sms every 90 days to keep the number and the credits do not expire...
  21. IMHO....There are two ways to ensure a lifelong interest in a property...one better than the other!. My situation is similar, except that my partner and I jointly and equally own the house, but this makes no difference to the OP's scenario. If she were to die first, her three children would each receive one quarter of her estate (ie one eighth of the house each), with the last quarter being distributed according to her will. If she dies intestate then I believe the surviving spouse inherits the remaining quarter i.e. Me! So in my scenario where she bequeaths the remaining quarter to her children, her three children would each own one sixth of the house) and under French law if two thirds of the owners of a property want to sell it they can force a sale, irrespective of the percentage of their ownership. As a surviving spouse I would retain the right to live in the property for one year, but after that, if the three children wanted their money they could force the sale of the house. However, it is complicated by the fact that at least one of them would still be under the age of consent, which would mean a judge would need to be appointed to look after the interests of the minor - I could not, effectively move house with the children as they would be awarded their money as soon as the house was sold so we would have to live in the house until the youngest reached 21 years of age. I also believe that, unless I persuaded two of the children to agree to it, I could not sell the property, an even if I did persuade two of them, if one was still underage the judge has to agree as well! There are two ways around this, the first is to set up a business which 'owns' the house and in which both my partner and I hold one share each, upon one death, the share passes to the surviving partner, who then retains complete control over the property. This effectively dis-inherits her children and as such is liable to be challenged in law, with a good possibility of the children winning - such is the entrenchment of the Napoleonic succession laws. Also, this route is expensive to set up and has yearly running costs. The second work-around is as Parsnips says, we have to marry and then both have to make a will and set up a donation entre epoux which gifts the usafruct to the surviving partner. The children would then inherit their one sixth ownership (thus satisfying their succession rights). This will cost about 700Euro. Being PACS (which we are, but for a different reason) is no help in this matter, it only helps with the inheritance taxation position. (60% if not married/PAC'd or 0% if PAC'd.....ummmmmm.. let me see )
  22. It is true that some currency traders do not financially protect your funds, although you should check that they are regulated by the FSA, they are not banks and therefore your funds are not automatically protected should the institution fail whilst your funds are in their care, but you have to think how long are your funds at risk for?. For amounts between £300 and £5000 I use one of the larger currency transfer organisations. (Sub £300 means a visit to the cash machine with a Nationwide card and over £5000 is a phone call to HiFx) the 'middle' company send me an email when my sterling lands in my (moneybookers) account and I log on and send it immediately to my french bank account - total risk....about 1 hour! I do not leave funds in the (moneybookers) account. Everybody will have to weigh the risks against the cost for each transaction.
