1. Hi Clair - yep I've had one for a while - brilliant, cheap (mine was around $25 but I believe they are 35€ in France) and works faultlessly. Great alternative to a satellite dish if you have decent broadband speeds. I just recommended Chromecast on a previous thread about internet tv... Happy viewing! Chiefluvvie :-) .
2. Guess what? I do disagree... A Samsung Smart TV is really simple to set up (do you have one Quillan?) works really well with all the TV player apps, Netflix, Love Film etc etc - much, much wider choice than any Humax box. This is all assuming you have a really good internet speed - absolute minimum of 2mbps consistently! If you don't then it's a complete no go. I have 17mbps average so no worries :-) As far as Smart DNS goes - try overplay.net - never let me down and been using them for over 2 years. If you don't like this 'all-singing option' then simply use a Chromecast dongle (around 35€ on amazon.fr) plugged into the back of your Smart TV and then 'cast' anything you like from your PC screen to the TV screen (e.g. Filmon, BBC iPlayer Google Play Movies etc etc) using your Chrome browser. Again you need a decent internet speed.... To be honest, satellite systems are on their way out - TV via the internet is the future..... Chiefluvvie :-)
3.
Thanks Quillan, The tv is a Samsung smart tv and I have a humax box but waiting for the guys to come tomorrow and sort out the lnbs as one is not working.but I brought all these in the uk so I would not have problems when connected. The apps the tv has downloaded are the french equivalents to the uk I think like France tv,les echo.fr,bfn tv and similar. It may all be ok after the sat dish is sorted out tomorrow so I will have to wait and see. John.
johny - your dish set-up will make no difference at all to the apps available on your Smart TV. You need to 'change' the country set-up on the TV as described above. Once you've done that the TV will automatically delete the French apps and install the UK ones. Chiefluvvie :-)
4. As you have a Samsung Smart TV - really easy to 'change' countries. Here's a link to some simple instructions: http://www.eyeondemand.com/faq/how-do-i-change-my-samsung-tv-app-store/ I suspect by 'sites' you mean 'apps' available on your Smart TV. Samsung Smart TV's are pre-programmed to their country of sale but, as already stated, it's easy to change countries and make your TV think it's in the UK (or anywhere else) - then you can load all the iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand 5 apps onto your TV. Importantly - for viewing in France you'll need a Smart DNS service - again easy to set up on your TV DNS settings. As for using your Humax box you can easily view BBC iPlayer and ITV Player - again using a Smart DNS service. You simply change the DNS setting in the Network Settings of your Humax box - just tap your Menu button on the Humax remote and you're off... Happy Viewing ! Chiefluvvie :-)
5. Planning your holiday around a teenager? How sad.... Time you took control... Chiefluvvie
6. Your experience Norman - not mine! Overplay have always been excellent and I use it on multi-devices. Must be something wrong with your set-up or devices. Unlike you - I have found Hola to be useless! Chiefluvvie :-)
7. So just contact them online Norman - they'll sort it out for you! Hola really screws up and slows down my devices! I've uninstalled it from everywhere. Chiefluvvie
8. Simple - filmon.com via pc or tablet / smartphone apps. or Use Smart DNS settings (e.g. via overplay, net) on your Smart TV / PC / Mobile device with the UK player apps (e.g. BBC iPlayer, ITV Player etc). Chiefluvvie :-)
9.
Thanks so much everyone. Yes we are LBC fans and in particular Steve Allen!! We are planning on installing FreeSat or Freeview in the spring so this may be our best route. I do have a new smartphone which I got for Christmas but have just figured out how to make phone calls on it so the radio aspect might have to come much later!! Evenings on the terrace with a glass of wine listening to an LBC podcast sound like my idea of heaven. Roll on the summer! Thanks again
Goodness Angie - if you already have a smartphone just download the LBC app onto it - they offer both iPhone and Android apps. Good pair of earphones and you're sorted! Chiefluvvie :-)
10. Oh dear - we're all doomed...... If Filmon should disappear (???) then you can just use the on demand 'players' - most channels have them now and you can even download for offline viewing from most of them.....you know 2014 and all that..... Chiefluvvie
11.
Another fan of LBC 97.3 here, but we have our radio via internet.
I've never found a better talk station anywhere! Love Steve Allen and download all his podcasts both from his regular show and his 'in conversation' interviews. Chiefluvvie
12. Hi Angie - yes. I listen to radio stations (and their podcasts) from just about anywhere (love LBC 97.3!) using my smartphone. Lots of stations have their own apps and if not there is always Tunein.com. So long as you have a good 3G/4G (i.e. where there is no wifi) connection that covers your location - you'll be just fine. However your regular 'radio' will most definitely not work. Chiefluvvie :-)
13. Oh crikey - I see life in France is still as complicated as ever!! Just use filmon.com - 10 hours free recording of whatever and whenever you like. You do have the internet in France don't you ??? DVD and MP3 players are due to 'expire' during 2014 - defunct due technological advances...... Chiefluvvie :-)
14. Couldn't agree more Betty and bonemachine. I threw away my rose tinted specs years ago - not easy because you so want things to be how you believe them to be. It's hard when they're not, and even harder to hold up a mirror and honestly reflect back what you see....some folks just can't deal with it and go into denial..... In fact I've been banned 3 times (surprise!) from that naff entrée forum for daring to state anything that could be remotely construed as being anti-French. How I've avoided being locked up in La Bastille, or being guillotined in the town square - goodness only knows. Anyway - I no longer grace them with my presence - all became a bit weird, like some kind of sect. Do you remember those brilliant end-of-pier games where you had to try and bash as many rabbit / beaver / raccoon heads as possible as they sprung up out of their burrows - well that other forum forum is a bit like that! Much prefer this one...... Chiefluvvie :-)
15. Well - firstly, I'd have fired the cashier for being rude and disrespectful to a customer - not in his/her remit to pass personal opinions. And, secondly, plastic bags come way, way down my list of what's really important - couldn't care less about them. Chiefluvvie :-)
16.   CeeJay there is a 'workaround' for getting to other websites from your Kindle Paperwhite 3G. Not too bad once you've done it a couple of times :-) Works for me.... http://blog.fsck.com/2012/10/3g-web-browsing-on-the-kindle-paperwhite.html Chiefluvvie :-)
17. Its a 'no brainer' for me - Transferwise - best rates by far, slick (same day by 15h00 if you want it) and very efficient / informative on-line system. The competition must be quaking in their boots..... Chiefluvvie
18. Yep - depends where abouts you're going to be in Paris! One of my favourites is Sebillon (sebillon.com) near Porte Maillot - easy to get to. Always pop by when I'm in town.... Have often used it when at the Longchamp races - the lamb is a speciality and simply historic! Chiefluvvie :-)
19. Spot on Eurotrash - in fact the editorial (by Guillaume Roquette) in Le Figaro Magazine last weekend included the statement that 'France is the most heavily taxed country in the developed world' - i.e. not just in Europe! It's all 'Smoke and Mirrors' - the French (and some French residents for that matter) are totally brainwashed.....and the fact that successive governments have been and are, totally incapable of addressing any core 'issues' - simply compounds the issue. The current tally for new taxes introduced by Hollandes' government alone must be over 90 by now.... So the ethos is - do nothing, just introduce more taxes - simple.... Chiefluvvie :-)
20. Absolutely right Sprogster ! If anyone reading this forum is planning a move to France primarily based on 'nice weather' expectations - then forget it instantly! I was in PACA for a long time and experienced some of the worst weather in my life. Cheifluvvie :-)
21. Snow - you're very welcome to it! Perish the thought - life is far too short for snow....one of the (many) reasons I happily left France.... You poor souls..... Chiefluvvie
22. Or Tunein Radio and listen to just about any radio station in the world! Chiefluvvie :-)
23. Concorde Frederick ? a whole new thread....:-) Chiefluvvie
