  1. Since I last posted about the dead bats, plenty have emerged so may be there were just a couple of old ones who didn't make it through that horrible spring.  (I believe bats can live for at least 20 years.) However, usually we have plenty of tree frogs here, and this year NONE. I haven't done a fire salamander check as I don't like to disturb them - but has anyone seen or heard (more likely!) tree frogs this year, and if so, whereabouts in France are you? As an afterthought, does anyone share my view that to demolish a swift or marten nest should be a capital crime - why do the towns persist in discouraging them? And does anyone know if any research has been done into the average deaths per motorist per lifetime of birds, mammals and invertebrates on the roads? Enough!  I sometimes get very gloomy about what is happening when I should still be out there trying to do my bit - hooray we have had several stag beetle sightings, at least!
  2. We are on the borders of the Haute Garonne and the Gers, near Samatan. For the first time ever I am finding dead bats in and around our barn - a long-eared and a short-eared. And the little colony of pipistrelles seems to have disappeared. Is anyone else finding dead bats - and does anyone know why? I would guess it's due to the terrible spring, so there are far fewer insects than usual;  worse, are there new insecticides that are killing the bat population? Any comments? Any help?
  3. I can't get hold of the thread - could you try re-identifying it as it could be very useful to me, thanks
  4. I have a fairly natural pond in the garden, and this year we have about a dozen enormous tadpoles.  They are around 4 inches long, with very large bodies and smallish tails. They are not newt tadpoles (efts) as there are no external gills.  Anyway, I believe newt tadpoles are small. Can some-one please help with identifying them, and advise on what to do if they are not a native species? Thanks! By the way, I Googled "huge tadpoles" and they are not as big as the ones you see on Herp Nation - which is a relief! - give yourself a treat (?) and have a look!
