  1. If you have seen any of my threads you will see I am wrestling with whether to live in france from next summer. We have visited the local lycee as well, but Rebecca is only in year 10 and will not take GCSE till 2004, to make it 'worse' she has been predicted 3 A*s at best and a C in Maths the worst. I am loath to take her out before she sits GCSE. But then if we wait that would put her behind agewise for Bac, and if she wanted to return to UK for Uni after 3 years, she would not then qualify for the student loan and we would then have to support her fully!! It really is a dilemma but she wants to live in France to get fluent. Elaine
  2. we bought our house dec 2001, we recd and paid a taxe foncieres in october. My neighbour who has property recd her taxe d habitation to be paid by dec 15, I was worrying in case our taxe d'habitation was sent the french address. I emailed both offices on the top of the taxe foncieres, I think it was the local one at Ploermel and and central at Rennes. I had an immediate reply telling me not to worry that it wasnt payable yet. I am sure they will let me know elaine
  3. My daughter is due to spend the 3rd of her Law with french degree in Nancy starting sept 2003 As we have never spent time in this part of france we dont know what to expect. Is there much german influence, culturally and architecturally, does it snow in winter?. Are there many brits in the region and what are rents like for appartments, she would prefer to live off of campus to be able to integrate more. thanks elaine
  4. >2. If you have paid 39 >years NHI contributions the 'government' >makes up the additional 5 >years to give you your >maximum of 44 years contributions. >But not if you move >to France. >Have I got this right? we hope to move to france next summer, I calculate that my husband has paid 38 years NI leaving school at 14 and 52 next birthday (January)but will check more fully. would it be possible to buy NI Stamp for the final year to make up to 39 years, I realise it would have to be some sort of self employed / contributory and not the employers stamp. elaine
  5. I take a Beconase for my hay fever i find Piriton doesnt do anything, Claratyn (I think) is the good one but thats 5.00 a week But is there an equivalent to Beconase in France elaine
  6. Had a phone call in work yesterday on my mobile, would like to pop over complete the transaction on Friday!!! Aghhh!! at: 1700hrs Aghhh!! you know what happens, are we doing the right thing/ are we sure? hard to remember Brittany on a hot sunny day in the middle of December then theres bank transfers!! I used to work for a high street building society/bank, missing payments I know all about them. Having been lulled into an unreal sense of security that we would complete until after Christmas its all become a bit of a rush, the judiciary in Limoges have all powers over our vendor, poor old lady, but it looks like they went back to work and got their finger out, Britline have been marvellous so has my notaire, so far, next worries are the electric and water and buildings insurance what can we do after coming out of the notaires at 17.30. We must have got the better half of the bargain though because it doesnt look like the vendors are going to take us to supper!! We are hoping to stay in the house friday and saturday so it looks like indoor camping should be fun wish us luck everybody elaine and john
  7. LAST EDITED ON 18-Oct-01 AT 09:33 PM (GMT) Well thats it, tomorrow is the 7th day, we returned from France last week, having been shown a property (from under the table) by my lovely Notaire and completion is set for around the 15 decembre. But how do I arrange to take over the elecricity from that date, and who goes in to check the meters,(the house is empty), do EDF go in on completion day, I have run out of holiday for this year and cannot stay for days and it is so near Christmas. I did read somewhere that one can get account details through the Notaire write to EDF and take over the same account, I also understand that there are different levels of entry for electricity supply and we have to inform EDF which level we require, the houe was previusly a holiday home so presumeably we can "take over" the exisitng account on the same basis. Also I have tried to go back to read old messages regarding the cheap electricity and these little boxes with today tomorrow and flasing lights, can someone explain that again to me, and would my sort of contract qualify. My husband also wants to know about the boxes to pick up english TV and do you have to pay a subscription elaine
