1. Ivy can have disasterous effects to walls and roofs. We treat new shoots and leaf growths in late spring with a French product called " Debrousalleuse" ( a strong weedkiller used for bambles and Ivy). We then follow up with a secound treatment early summer. Coupled with cutting back at ground level this should kill it off. It may stay green for several weeks after treatment but the trick is to treat the new shoots so it is absorbed into the plant. Afterwards it is just a case of physically cutting it out of the building and seeing what damage has occurred.
2. We now have our phone connected via our livebox and are subscribed to the internet/phone illimité offer. We still pay our line rental to FT but that is all we pay them as abviously our phone and internet are included in the internet forfait. The problem is that I cannot get our phones to recieve messages via the 3103 or 888 messagerie service . People think they are leaving messages but they are never there. I have activated the phone over ADSL via the livebox set up, and also been onto "mon compte" on orange and activated the messagerie. I have also rung in from a mobile phone and tried pressing hash (diez) as instructed after leaving my message but it still does not work. This is a different messaging servive than via a standard FT line because when you dial in (either 3103 or 888) you get a different welcome message. I was wondering if it is necessary to activate the "messagerie vocale enriché service" for an extra 1.5 euros a month via FT for it to work ?? Surely there must be people out there who use the telephone illimité service and have the free answerphone setup working - or not? I do have an actual answerphone on my house phone base station, but the problem is that the base station is plugged into the livebox (obligatory) which is upstairs,  and I have to go upstairs to activate the seperate answephone each time I go into the garden or down to the shops. In any case I would prefer to use the in built service if possible. Any ideas anyone?
3. Hi, My hubby has bought some building equipment on ebay and the owner has said he will accept either paypal or a "cheque certifié de banque" . As we have a 3 hour drive to go and collect this stuff we would prefer to see it and pay when we collect , to make sure it is all there, as we have been stiched up ( hubbys phrase !) before. The amount is 1500 euros. We are due to go on Monday morning, the banks are of course closed on Mondays, an added complication. My questions are; 1. If we write a business cheque - is this the same as a cheque certifié de banque , or do we need to go to see our bank to get it ? 2. Or if we pay by Paypal  - can the payment be deffered until we see the goods somehow. Any suggestions on the best approach please? Maria
4. Now I'm confused about this so can anyone explain how it works? I am supposed to cancel my motor insurance two months before the renewal date by writing to my insurer- correct? But then if I don't cancel it I can still cancel it up to 20 days after I have the renewal notice from the insurer ??? Don't make sense to me! I have had a renewal notice sent out to me for a motor policy which will expire in two weeks time by AGF insurance. Contrary to the post above, there is no mention anywhere about cancellation rights or Loi Chatel ? Can anyone please explain in clear terms what it's all about ? Thanks!
5. We have had a devis from a kitchen company to install a kitchen and they proposed to pipe the gas ( from our bottles) to our cellar and have the bottles down below. I am sure I read somewhere that this is not alllowed?? Can anyone confirm if this is allowed or not please?
6. No problem jamesdee - I'm glad the replies helped you out too! Danny thanks for the "secret" code [:)]
7. The post has been hijacked slightly and so there still does not seem to be an answer to my earlier question on how to make signatures clickable. I understand Sunday Drivers explanation for text, but how does one do it for signatures which are created in your profiles?? Like the temp signature I have created below for this site - why isn't it blue??? When creating signatures there is no obvious hyperlink button to create a link, as there is above while I am typing this.
8. Thank you Sunday driver - that anwers half of my question, but what about signatures then, as they don't show up in the message box when typing a reply. I noticed for instance that Quillans signature is not highlighted but other posters signatures are.???
9. Why is is that in some post,  links to websites (either in signatures or in the main message content) show up as blue clickable links , whereas in others they stay as ordinary text that is not clickable? Is it my PC settings or is it something I can change in my profile??? In other words how can I make a website link clickable in a post? Or better still have a link that says click Here?
10.
Groups A & B are without time limit.  The additional groups require a medical every 5 years up to the age of 60, every 2 years from 60 to 76 and then annually after that.  You can download the form here thttp://www2.equipement.gouv.fr/formulaires/fic_pdf/11247.pdf (it can be completed on screen and printed out).  The medical costs €24,40 and has to be carried out by a doctor on an approved list, which is obtainable from your Mairie, Préfecture or Sous-Préfecture.  From your post you have probably been through that before.  You will also need two passport sized photographs and a stamped self-addressed envelope.  Subject to passing the medical the form should be sent off by the doctor and you retain a copy of the certified medical form as proof of elligibility until your renewed licence is returned. Groups D(D) and E(D) require an annual medical every year after the age of 60.
Weegie thanks for that prompt reply, I haven't done it before but a couple of years ago I gave a lift to a male friend of mine to a medical for his permis renewal. Unfortunately he died last year and so I wasn't sure what the proceedure was. I'll download the form and see how I get on ! Many thanks to both of you for your prompt replies [kiss]
11. Thanks for the reply Clair. If you open up and look inside on any French licence you will see the categories listed and in the next column they are  "depuis le " ( valid from) and jusqu'a ( valid to) dates. I have to admit I have only just realised that it is my categories C, D and E that have expired and there is no expiry date in the column for categories B1, and B. I noticed that category E (subsection B) is for towing a caravan so it would be a shame to lose it for instance! Edit; I have just rung a French friend who says that if I don't want to lose the right to the other categories, I have to renew them but she said it is probably a visit to the Prefecture. So although I am in less of a panic now, I still would like to know if anyone else has done this and what are the proceedures.
12. Just realised that my French driving licence expired two months ago ! - I actually didn't realise that French licences that have been exchanged from UK licences only get a validity of 5 years, - so a friendly warning to anyone else who hasn't checked theirs recently [:D] Could some kind soul please tell me what the proceedure is to get the licence renewed ? I guess that it probably involves a medical but as our Prefecture is about an hours drive away, I would like to be well prepared for a visit if necessary. Is there a form that could be completed online, or something ? Thanks in advance
13. Thanks for all the helpful replies and Clair that link was very useful. I have now found a suitable bed! Ford Anglia - Your apology is accepted [:D]  I'm sure you interact better in real life than you do on fora ![;-)]
14.
I'm confused. You start off saying you want to source a King-sized bed in France, then go on to talk about Salisbury? Last time I looked, Salisbury was in England, and costs to ship a KS bed to France would be pretty high. Have you tried any decent furniture dealers near your French property? Try www.pagesjaunes.fr Our KS bed came from one in St Junien, 87, had to be ordered, it's carved oak foot and head, hardwood sides, a sommier and a memory foam mattress. Cost quite a bit, but nowhere near what shipping from the UK would[;-)]
Not need to get confused. You assume too much my dear friend (remember assume makes an ass out of u and me!) Sometimes I wonder if posters set out deliberately to atagonise/patronise . I travel regularly to the Uk and so delivery is no problem - I have a big van.I've lived in France for13 years so am well aware on what is available here and at what price, so I know my market.
15. It's a bit of a long shot but........... Am trying to source a decent king size bed in France but have not yet come across anything suitable. I had a friend who used to live here in France who had a lovely King size wooden bed but unfortunately has moved back to the Uk and we are now out of touch . I remember and noted down that she told me it came from a large bed shop on the A30 Southamton Road in Salisbury on the Tesco roundabout and I think was calling ." (something)............. Living. Any of you peeps know of this shop? Thanks in advance.
16. I have a livebox upstairs in our French house which serves that part of the house and some of downstairs very well. I also have a wired Cat 5 cable going from the livebox to a 5 port switch at the other end of the house where WIFi range is virtually non existant. Could I just plug in a wireless access point to the 5 port switch to give me a wireless network at this end of the house? I was thinking of either a Netgear WG602 or a D link DWL 2100AP.
17. When you say sockets can you explain in more detail. Ie; Should the tube below slot inside the next one up or should the higher one slot into the lower one?
18. Hi, after waiting for several weeks now for a French artisan to come and fix our washing machine, I have now given up on him after he has let lme down twice now, so decided to attempt to replace the drum bearings myself. Has anyone ever done this and if so is it a relatively easy job for a good DIY'er. Any tips /things I should know?
19. Success !!  Many Thanks for all replies and especially to MartinWatkins. I eventually got it set up on Astra 2 at ground level in the back garden after having some problems with obstructions (barns, trees etc). I hope now it hasn't blown over or altered when I return on Saturday! I have managed to get all different ITV1 regions. Can anyone confirm definetely that the rugby is going to be shown on ITV1 this saturday?? Dare I ask what a slingbox is?  MOH says it is a type of shoe she used to wear when she was younger!
20. Thanks again, sorry about the confusion between what boxes I had. So it looks  like I'll try for ITV,digital on astra 2 then, as TF1 is unavailable on digital. Unfortunately I have no internet at the house where I will be setting it up so I will return here and post my progress. The sat receiver instructions look a bit scary as there is loads of technical stuff in there that seems daunting. I hope that once I have found the satelllite, the box will tune/search automatically?
21.
As Anton says,  or buy a digital box and dish and set it up on Astra 2 at 28 deg east if the matches are on ITV. You don't say what TV you'll be using but the analogue 5 deg W route may not display in colour on a TV bought in the UK,  although a French TV will be fine.
Thanks Martin, mluch appreciated Ok I've just checked, and this is what I have; A digital worldsat Imperial 300SLsatellite receiver; A satellite dish on a pole and heavy ground base; a compass; a cheap sat bleeper; a TV bought in the Uk that is Pal /secam compatible. So if I set this up at Astra2 at 28 deg east, what channels will I receive. Is it easy to confuse this satellite with others in the proximity. Any further advice much appreciated. I have a slight disability so it's not that easy for me either!
22. Thanks for the replies so far - a local bar is out of the question as I have two very young children to look after . Neighbour is a Parisien and the house is a maison secondaire so it is all locked up! Do you know what channels I would get with a analogue dish and receiver as I have an old one bought from bricomarché about two years ago? ( I assume it is analogue??)  Would this be any good? Just to get TF1 will do but ITV would be slightly better!
23. I am going to be at a house in France on saturday that has no TV set up at all and I want to watch the rugby ( in French or English it doesn't matter!). The house is in a bit of a dip and so a TV aerial may be a problem as the neighbours aerial is on a long pole on their chimney. What is the quickest and cheapest set up i can rig up tempoarily to get the matches please. i think they are being shown on TF1 in France and probably ITV in the UK channels.  Any advice warmly welcomed!
24.
You will miss the Cyprus climate in the winter. More rain and cold. Make sure your house has adequate heating and good insulation.
Judging by this summers weather in France I Think I'd be missing the Cyprus climate in the summer too! Davey50 - Fancy a house swap ? Then I could spend my days relaxing next to Aphrodite's pool!!! Or was that in Paphos????
25. I think there may be copyright law issues here so I would be careful ?   Mut.
