1. You obviously know all Clark. Forgive me but I do not know much about his condition apart from the following. My brother in law is an insulin dependent diabetic, he is not a medical wreck waiting to fall off his knife edge perch at any moment as you put it.  He needs to drive for his job and to commute to and from it, it's more a necessity than a thrill, much as I expect it is for most still living on an over crowded island.  He does manage his blood sugars well but even so he does have the odd rare episode.  To loose his license would be loosing his employment and as such his income, his families income. What I was saying was surely if a diabetic is dependent on his license for his mobility or income then covering up a potentially harmful hypo would look attractive. If you don't have anything useful to input then why comment at all?
2. Thanks for the link Q, I have forwarded it to my sister who's husband is diabetic. One big problem I can see is diabetics will just not seek medical help in the hope they can get over it them selves so there will be no record of it.  Dangerous.
3. Just a quickie that may save me a bit of time if you please.  Can I visit any Hotel des Impots (one out of our department) for my quittus fiscal certificate for our UK car.  We passed the CT today  so now on to the next stage [:)] Whilst I am at it.  Could I visit a local prefecture in another department or does it have to be on in ours?  Thanks. Ian
4. Especially if it involves 18% alcohol[6]
5.

I did think of a white Pinot, easily available and not a million miles away from a sherry.
Edit: Please change one pineau to pinot.
Don't know what you mean?[Www]

7. Try it, might work well.  With all those spices in you probably wouldn't taste the marsala anyway.
8. The desert is a bit special.  Its spiced figs in Marsala wine syrup with mascarpone cheese. Marinade the dried figs for at least 6 hours in marsala wine with a drop of Stroh, if you can find it it's 80% alcohol and as such most of it boils off but it's taste is quite distinctively rum and resin and it makes a world of difference.  Quarter the dried figs and leave to soak in enough wine to cover them, add a drop of Stroh and about a desert spoon of brown sugar per portion.  To this add a good pinch of freshly ground nutmeg, pinch of ground cloves, a few mace blades, a pinch of all spice and plenty of cinnamon. When you want it put it in a pan and bring to the boil, do not smoke, all that alcohol burns like hell, literally.  Boil stirring continuously until the syrup starts to thicken, if you get it just right it will become almost gelatinous like soaked gelatine.  Gooey!  The figs will give their sugars to the syrup and become sweet and chewy, their seeds make the syrup look lovely ane are crunchy in the syrup. Pour over the mascarpone and enjoy. I use about 4 figs per person, it's quite filling.  I did try expensive muscovado sugar once but I found it over powered the dish a bit and made it taste a bit treacley.  Perfect for cold winter nights. Enjoy :-)
9. I am finding Marsala wine a bit hard to get hold of, any one got any alternatives.  I want it sweet and white, I use it for a desert.  I was thinking a Muscat what do you lot think?
10. Thanks for the replies people.  We have received this from our accountant: In the situation where there is no agent I think the tenant is supposed to deduct the tax which seems to me to be bureaucratic nonsense.  I would be tempted to collect the rent as usual and simply declare it on your tax returns.  Whilst technically you may be breaking the rules there would be no loss of tax to HMRC so they would not really have any cause for complaint.  The rules are set up to stop non-resident landlords taking the money and never paying any tax but this is clearly not going to be the case here. Why is nothing in life and tax simple :-(   I think we shall leave it in the hands of him, he's always been a very good asset.
11. Hi. We still own our old UK home and have decided to rent it out to bring us a bit of income in.  We got in touch with our UK accountant who has written the following. Unfortunately, the rental income is taxable in the UK, as is the interest.  It is more complicated than that too!  As a non-resident landlord the rental income should have tax deducted at source, that is by the letting agency (if you are using one).  You can fill in a form to get exemption from having tax deducted at source but I am not sure it is worth the hassle.  The link below gives you full details of the way it should work:   http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/nr_landlords.htm   In addition to the above there is a possibility that as French residents the income is also taxable in France, although the tax due would almost certainly be reduced by the UK tax already paid.  I am afraid I do not know enough about French tax to be able to advise on this! We are letting the house privately to a family member and not through an agent.  I was always under the impression we would pay tax on the income here in France and it would be bundled up together with our earnings.  Have I got it wrong, again?  Do we need to pay UK tax AND French tax? Thanks for any advice. Ian
12.
I ask this because the immediate vision that came to my mind was the amount of times I used to see the electronic speed limit signs on the M25, M2, M11, M23 and M4 drop down to 50mph as I crawled along at 20 or 30 mph thinking "if only". [:(]
I like the signs that say "speed checks in operation" whilst you're doing the 5mph crawl through holiday traffic or the likes.  Always makes me think of a 50 year old copper on a wobbly bush bike pottering through the traffic peeping in through the windows, looking at your speedo to see how fast you're going..
13. Thanks Will. So declare to be legal or don't if we want to sell the house in a few years?  We were thinking of my wife going AE for this.
14. We used to use Autan for prevention.  We went to Corsica on holiday a few years back, the mozzies there were hardcore and just licked it off to find what they wanted, it was like we were not wearing anything at all.  Then we went to a chemist and bought the only repellant they sold, it was called Marie Rose and was brilliant.  Well worth looking up if you need something.
15. How would you be able to charge TVA if you were not registered for it? This one is quite interesting for me as we have a large house and were thinking of taking guests for a couple of months a year.  However, I doubt we would want to be doing this full time or on a permanent basis and would like to keep our options open if we wanted to sell the house in a few years. Any more info would be greatly received. Thanks.
16. That's a bit cheap for a Panda though[:)]
17.
You are obviously tastier than Julie.
Easy, she'll get jealous lol.
I think deer fly also goes by the name stable fly and other names too
Yes, ooohh you nasty little b**ard was one I christened them with.  I still have a red weld on my arm from one bite, that was ages ago and it's only just fading now. I don't know for certain it's the harvest mite but the symptoms etc all point that way.
18. I think I identified the ones that had me as deer flies. I came cross them only the other day when looking for what the latest thing to dine out on me was.  I have now been eaten by Harvest mites. I seem to attract biting things.  We went camping to Cap Feret a couple of weeks ago.  It was really hot so we had to leave the tent flaps open.  Bad mistake.  I got bitten 11 times in an hour, Julie didn't get bitten once[:@]
19.
Great shot Crossy! what lens have you got for that? 600? Fureys
Photobhcket is your friend.  Well, at least I am honest lol.  I am waiting my new/old camera, the nail I have now wouldn't get a decent picture if the bird was dead at the side of the road.

21. Simple way to find value before VAT is to divide total be 1.05.  Treat the percentage as it is, 0.05% of the total.  Works with any rate %age.  100/1.05=95.24 so vat is 7.76.  For 20% vat divide by 1.2 etc.
22. I have had the same problem with BBC.  I have found if you click download options and download for windows media player then you can watch it through that.
23. My desk top widget is still showing 1.164
24. Wow, I can't believe over 60 pages.  Well I can, you're such a popular, liked and helpful person on here 60+ pages is what you deserve and many more too.  I have to admit, I haven't red many over the past month or two, I have been so busy but I will echo what everyone else has been saying and wish you all the best for tomorrow. Take care. Ian
