  1. I always leave them be, but this year we had a v persistent one in the bedroom. One night it got hit by the ceiling fan and ended up in my hair(v curly ,btw) I managed to stay calm and put my head out the window until it had made it's way out. In the morning it was back and I noticed it was always heading for the same spot where I found the beginnings of a nest under a beam. .......She had to go,unfortunately the situation was too dangerous. Check out their behaviour and if there's a nest forming  then you'll have to kill them.
  2. Wrong way round, def. We did it too!!
  3. We have a Henry which was inherited after a new panasonic couldn't cope and have tried Hoover and Dyson. Have been using it here for 9 years without any probs.I bought a cloth bag as this dwelling is like the Flintstones cave and we would have got through paper bags at a rate of knots. It has the strongest suction I know of ( having to cope with stones sometimes) ,a robust thick plastic casing and a smile ,of course!
  4. Good luck with trying to clarify everything!! We have a chambres d'hotes and are with Gites de france. 2 years ago there was great consternation at a meeting when we were told we would all have to do a hygeine course if doing table d'hote regardless of how long we'd already been doing it. There was then a bit of backtracking when it was realised one could kill someone at breakfast as well as at dinner , but that was seen as the final straw for many B&B's to make everyone do a hygeine course. We are keeping our heads down until we're told what we must do, nothings been mentioned at any of the meetings since then. I think ,as usual, It depends on the area you're in and the vigilence of the powers that be.
  5. It's true Quillan !! We have more bookings at this time of year than we've ever had before. I think maybe the French are staying at home this year and they are our biggest market. We get very few from abroad.
  6. lots of French go for the insert stove with the hot air circulation, you can see them at any brico. Circulating hot water doesn't seem to be popular round here. Possibly due to the electricity cutting out often ,which has already been pointed out.
  7. I am a cockney, so my french accent is abysmal. If I can put a y in anywhere ,I will. A french friend asked me the english names of trees and I heard " maypull' coming back at me. Tres has got to be traie in my world of the glottl stop!!
  8. So sad. I found a dead heron in the reeds today. It was frozen so not sure how long it's been there ,but is in perfect condition apart from a chest wound. I called the local taxidermist to see if he wanted it , but it's illegal  to use protected species. I can understand that as it would create a demand, but it's such a shame it cannot be mounted. I'll just have to do a good painting of it. W Rat
  9. I hate my french gas cooker too! It wasn't cheap ,but seems so . it'a a double size SAUTER.........really bad.
  10. We have a resident white heron. Def not an egret ,as we have those too.
  11. Pectin is available in any large supermarket. It should be near the sugars.
  12. we've used Limoges airport ,courtesy of Ryanair for 8 years and I must admit I thought the cheap fares would have ended years ago, but no they are still available !Granted, there is limited availability during the winter, but I thank them heartily every time I make a booking.
  13. Damning with faint praise, methinks.....
  14. BTW I see you do boxing. My brother is a pad-boxing coach and I rather skeptically had a go ....... what a buzz!! it's great for those who don't really like exercise.
  15. I think it's great you are doing well. We are all struggling to some extent during these straightened days, but don't forget to enjoy y'selves. I seem to remember you are horseriders ( from a photo?) and that's what i'm making the most of during this glorious autumn. It does wonders for the head!!
  16. Thanks Osie . Might order a couple of sheets ,see what they're like.
  17. Yes, although they do hibernate, it's not cold enough yet. They'll be out and about on any warm day . We have a chambres d'hotes and sometimes the guests hear their particular song ( bit like a jew's harp). A particular gentleman seemed somewhat sensitive and asked if the place was haunted 'cos he thought he saw someone playing a guitar at the foot of the bed," Oh no, that's the dormouse" I replied. Apparently, he sat up the following night to catch the lerot playing a guitar! We always explain it away by saying this is the depths of the countryside and a bit of wildlife must be expected. Some people are fascinated and would love to see them,,,,,they are cute, but I would love to be rid of them. The english name is garden dormouse . Makes them sound so romantic!
  18. For hotel supplies. VEGA I was looking at their bedlinen. The prices look pretty good ,I was wondering about the quality. W Rat
  19. looks like you are getting lots of good advice so won't wade in with our experience .just another mention about GdF. It looks like not many members here are with them, but we wouldn't survive without them. However , we are in quite an isolated, non-touristy region so you may not need them where you are. It won't cost you anything to have them visit and their advice is worthwhile.
  20. We've been chambre d'hoting for 7 years. Before starting we were very confused with conflicting advice, so we did what we would have done in the UK...... saw an accountant. Good Luck !
  21. Buzzards are very variable .we have one here that is almost completely white and another which is black.
  22. I have no idea about this prog as we don't have TV. Will try to catch it when I'm in Blighty, but is it it true that there's no such thing as bad publicity?
  23. could be LEROT. Bit like chipmunks with a tassel on the end of the tail.V hard to eradicate. We've learnt to live with them. Garden dormouse in english.
  24. Anyone who asks for particular dates ,then says if not available, any will do, goes straight in the poubelle!
