  1. Thank-you Rabbie, I think I've put my husband off becoming "Irish" for life! Hee Hee ;-)
  2. Lindal1000, This is super helpful, thank-you :-) It's very reassuring to hear peoples own experience rather than just reading oodles and oodles of information on various 'official' websites which still leave niggly doubts in my mind, so thank-you again. Apologies to Idun for confusing you regarding posting in this section - I guess it's going to take a while to get used to the UK being "Outside the EU" in the near future....
  3. Hi, We are moving to France in January and are naturally concerned about the rights of UK citizens to live and work in France after brexit, (not to mention a possible frexit). My parents are Irish so I can apply for dual Irish nationality and passport so presumably I won't be affected by Brexit but where does this leave my husband? My question basically is - As he is my spouse, is he granted the same rights as me if I am in effect an EU citizen? I hope someone can help answer this question or point me in the direction of an official information source on the matter... Thanks, folks. Erica :-)
  4. "Plus your point about gites as separate buildings being expensive tax-wise is so true. When you think that taxe d'hab and fonc here are both partially accessed on how many bathrooms/wcs with handbasins etc there are in a property - so called 'luxury' installations - it is no wonder the French don't do ensuites in the same number as in the UK. We have some English friends who are trying to sell their beautiful, gloriously modern house by the sea. It is beautifully presented, perfect in every detail. They have had lots and lots of viewings in the 5 months it has been on sale but the potential purchasers (all French) baulk at the 3 en-suite bedrooms and mutter darkly when told the property taxes." This really is eye opening info...thank-you.
  5. that's really interesting, to hear it form your hindsight's perspective. I must admit I'd not heard of an apparthotel before just now - I'll look into it. I imagine the areas around Bordeaux might be more suitable for an apparthotel...perhaps not so much where we're wanting to be based, in the Dordogne but like I said it's an interesting concept an certainly something I'll look into so thank-you. The gite business is really only a supplement for my writing and illustration so it only has to be viable/enjoyable and 3-4 months per year. I have a long term plan to host crafting workshop holidays which would be much more niche and perhaps a little more lucrative. Bearing in mind what you mentioned earlier about avoiding, or at least trying to avoid a large foncier bill I'll consider whether the property I buy can be classed as "one property", with "extra bedrooms". With Crafting workshop holidays the guests, (in groups of six) would be more like house guests rather than accommodating themselves in a gite so that might be a long term better option for the future...do you think?
  6. I honestly don't know what I would do with out you two helping me! I really do appreciate it very much. I haven't bought anywhere yet - I'm renting for a year while I look around and see if French life suits my family. We are planning 2/3 gites on site with a max of two bedrooms each, no pool and the commune will hopefully be 24310. Thanks again for the info :-)
  7. Dear All, I'm currently working out a business plan to see if running gites in France (Dordogne) is going to be viable. I already have an up and running business as a children's book author & Illustrator which I can transfer to France so the gites will be a supplementary income. However the cost of the tax d'habitation & fonciere is concerning me as I've heard of extremely high rates - 6000 euros for three gites and a residence! Are there any gite owners out there who would be willing to share how much the above taxes cost them per annum so I can make a rough estimate as to how much I will have to fork out? Please do private message me if you would prefer to keep the conversation private. Thank-you in advance for any help or advice available Erica
  8. Thank-you Chancer, this is really helpful :-) Thank-you to everyone who has kindly taken the time to reply to my post.
  9. Thank-you Eurotrash, It's slowly starting to come together now in my head, (although it's still seemingly very complicated). i think the best course of action may be to ask an accountant to analyse my personal situation... It does seem viable at the moment though as I'm not planning on any borrowings and will have no mortgage...I'll keep plugging away at my plan! Whether Brits will actually have the right to live and work in France after the Brexit and a potential Frexit is another matter! Is there a thread on this subject? I'd be very curious to read it if three is. I have looked but couldn't see one...
  10. Thank-you for replying "alittlebitfrench" . I'm currently trying to work through my figures to see if it's viable. It would be a supplement to my writing and illustration business which although does well, it won't support a family of four alone. If I can make (profit) £10'000 from the gite business a year I'd be happy, just as a top up to my writing/illustration. Do you mean that you think running a gite business as one's only source of income would be suicide? Do you think if it's run alongside another business, (like mine) it could perhaps work better? I'm hoping Chancer can offer some advice too...does anyone know him/her well enough to give them a little nudge this way? Thank-you again :-)
  11. Dear all, I'm trying to work out some figures for earnings on a gite business and am finding the tax system a bit confusing. As far as I can understand it, if one sets up the gite business as a Micro Enterprise you pay 50% on 50% of your gross but applying for a "meuble de tourisme" means you pay 50% on only 29% of your gross... From what I've read in the past, French taxes are astronomical so this sounds a bit too reasonable to be true. Are there hidden taxes I've missed? If anybody would be kind enough to help explain to a 'gite business novice' I would be very grateful! Thanks, Erica
  12. Dear all, We are moving over to France at the end of the year. "We" are myself, my husband, our 8 year old daughter and by then a newborn baby. (And a cat). If you, or anybody you know has a property that would be available for such a period of time then please PM me or email me. We need at least two bedrooms and the closer to Brantome the better although we would consider further afield. We can provide references, we both work, (husband in motorsport and I'm a children's author/illustrator). Any communication/help would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you in advance, Erica
  13. Thank-you Russethouse :0) I wondered about the 'link' thing I'll have a look tomorrow and update my profile. Hi Swissie, MH'boro is only 10 minutes down the road from us. It's a lovely town :0) Right, I really must go to bed now! Again, so happy for all the welcome comments :0) Erica x
  14. Thanks so much for the lovely comments about my illustrations :0) I've got some more stuff to see here - http://www.plumpuddingillustration.com It's my agents website, with more up to date work :0)  Just Click on Erica-Jane Waters (of course, if you are at a loose end). Erica x
  15. Oh my Goodness! I'm so pleased to hear from you all :0) I live in a little village near Kettering, it's a little escape from Kettering/Northampton which are both full of boarded up shops unfortunately :0( I'm originally from Northern Ireland, but have lived here in England longer than anywhere...obviously, not my cup of tea. I do love a lot about England but could never, ever possibly afford the house or the area I've always dreamed of.  I'm not rich, (people think I must be because I've had books published!), but am hoping for a fairly simple, but realistic lifestlye in France. Nick, Sienna and I are looking around Perigord Vert or Noir, or if need be West Correze, near Beaulieu sur dordogne, (please excuse my spelling). We've had it with the East Midlands and realise that life is short, so it's now or never. We fell in love with the region on our honey moon, and have visited every year, to the same gite, eight years in a row. I'm quite ready for any GOM, I'm actually quite interested to know what the forum's know-it-alls have to say ;0)  So, thanks sooooo much for saying hi, and I'll be back with a squillion questions very soon!! Off to watch Titanic...again. Erica x
  16. I wasn't too sure where to post an 'introduction' post, so thought I'd drop by here and say 'Hello'. My name is Erica and I'm planning a move to France, so am finding all the information on this forum a wonderful resource. I'm married to Nick and we have a two year old daughter, Sienna-Rose. I hope to make some 'e-friends' here, and look forward to joining in on some of the discussions once I have had a really good look around :0) I'm a children's book illustrator, I also write children's books and illustrate for magazines, greetings cards etc. So, I hope everyone, whether here in Britain or across the 'Manche', is having a lovely Saturday evening. My website, which is in dire need of updating is http://www.ericajanewaters.com and I also have a blog where I post up my silly scribblings, odd dollies and general day to day daftness - http://www.ericas-attic.blogspot.com I look forward to being involved, Best wishes,   Erica
  17. Hi, I'm a children's book illustrator/author planning to move to France with my husband and young daughter. I've been reading all the threads regarding taxes, healthcare etc and am waiting until I get my head around it all a little better before I start asking a million questions!! In the meantime, I was just curious to know if there is anybody on this forum who is currently earning a living in France as an illustrator/author/artist/graphic designer etc etc?
