  1. Brilliant website to search directly with French agents for property http://www.seloger.com Much easier now they have a UK flag to translate. You can enter 4 towns at a time and its search engine finds all the property available from those 4 town's agents.

  3. I was very glad to see these postings this morning, because I visited the LF stand at the exhibition yesterday and first had a little chat with Eleanor's colleagues because Eleanor was at lunch. I told them to tell her I symphathised with her problems with La Mairie and not to let it get to her when some people have a moan. "Please come back to the stand and tell her that because she sometimes gets rather down in the dumps when there is a lot of moaning" they said. So I returned later and told her myself. She was very pleased to hear most of us do appreciate this forum. After all, my feeling is that its free-of-charge, is an invaluable source of information and links up many people who might not otherwise have met. Keep up the good work Eleanor - I for one do really appreciate it. Incidentally, if you are visiting the exhibition, do go and see Eleanor, she said its nice to put a face to a name. Diane

    Dentists

We had to find a dentist while our son was visiting us in France in September. He had broken a tooth on the outward journey. We knocked on a dentist's door, he made an appointment for our son the next morning. The repair took nearly an hour - the charge? 12.00. Our dentist in the UK charges more than that for an examination! Diane Rolph (79)
  5. Do you know, your little story has made my day. I'd actually been thinking about you and how things were progressing, and even wondering if you'd perhaps made a wrong move. But it just goes to show that with a little effort, things can be put to rights and that you will intregrate with your community. In spite of efforts on our part to learn French, we are progressing very slowly. We have a delightful and very friendly gentleman who walks around our village twice a day, and always speaks if we are outside. Trouble is, he speaks very fast and says a great deal in a very short time so we both stand there open-mouthed trying to think how to reply! We look forward to the day when we can have a decent conversation with him and not be frightened to invite him in for a cup of coffee (or something stronger!)
  6. I am hoping someone can help, but I suppose its a bit unlikely due to the complications of the problem, however, lets give it a try! Having put a toe in the water by buying a holiday home in France we are now seriously considering relocating there full time. The move would, however, also involve my 86 year old disabled mother who is keen on the prospect of living with us and being looked after. She speaks good French and has spent many happy holidays in France, so I think shed settle happily. Her main concern and the problem I need to resolve is that she is a diabetic and also a leg amputee. She is currently under the care of Roehampton Limb Hospital and would need to find a similar unit in either 79 or the Loire region. Are there any amputees out there who could advise? Btw, my mother worked full time to 65 so has paid full NI in the UK. She would not be calling upon the French taxpayer for any benefits. I realise we would all have to obtain CPAM and understand 70% of medical costs can be reclaimed and that it would be sensible to obtain a top up insurance. Many thanks Diane
  7. I was tempted to put this in the food and drink section at LF, because thats exactly what I am, food for mosquitoes! Does anyone share my problem? Last year in the Loire at the end of June I was bitten all over - 40 bites or so. However, there was one bite that was horrendous! Id thought it was a mosquito, but I do remember brushing something off my leg because the pain of the bite was instant. I am beginning to wonder it could have been a Cicindela (or tiger beetle), which I understand to be carnivorous. Has anyone suffered a bite from one? To cut a long story short, my whole leg swelled, the bite was enormous and required medical treatment including antibiotics, cream, special washing liquid etc., as it was beginning to turn gangrenous. I felt ill for the rest of the holiday still have the scar, and an occasional niggle from it! My question is of course, what is the best deterrent? Also, I think I read somewhere that mosquitoes dont like lavender. Can anyone confirm this? If so, I shall rush out and buy lavender bath/shower gel, soap, body lotion, and of course lavender perfume!
