  1. In response to d] Having the sense to have a Sat Nav that conforms with the law,    I did, someone moved the goalposts. In response to "where has the information come from?" I contacted my local and department main office and got two different answers, local police station says, "illegal to use, illegal to have" Main office for the department says, "illegal to use, ok if just switched off". Both said they had no legal right to check your unit if stopped, but said customs did!!!! So I am more than happy that I HAVE checked with official sources, and convinced they know as little as we do

  3. It's all getting beyond a joke now, I have never seen so many grey areas appear so quickly!   4. I finally got a response from Garmin yesterday. Baring in mind this has been in the offing since last May, and I contacted them in over a month ago, they have leapt into action and told me to "switch off the database on my unit" !!!! Brilliant, never thought of that. I have replied asking how this would sit with those who may have just paid the hefty subscription charge to renew, who brought their units based on the fact the dadtbase WAS on their system, or why TomTom have a solution in place, and that some have said that simply having the database is against the law, etc etc Now I'm waiting for a response, which by recent history will be next January.
  5. I can "one upman" that!!! Though not a VW. I worked at a motor museum, and the owner imported a 1914 LaFrance fire engine, originally used in "Bugtustle". 15 litres, chain drive it still had it's ladders and buckets on it, though the red paint was somewhat faded, but it had benefitted from being stored near Los Angeles. On arrival, the yres were pumped up, and it was towed out of the sea contaner, an egg cup full of wd40 down each barrel (thanks to it having priming taps on the heads), left over night, an she turned on the handle. Fresh petrol, a freshly charged battery on the trembler ignition and two turns later, she was running. I even took the thing around the test track, very very heavy steering, two feet on the (right hand side) brake pedal to stop, but still it was brilliant. It was sold and coverted into a two seat roadster, which seemed a hell of a shame.
  6. I got an email from Garmin UK yesterday saying simply that they are aware, are looking into it, not to worry, and they'll let me know!
  7. Called them today as we have a booking for 16th Dec'. Very very helpful. Gave me three options. 1] They are in negotiations with purchasers, and it might be by then, they'll be running again. 2] Travel to Dover as normal, check in, and IF Sea France are not sailing they will get us on another operator, if they have room. 3] Give them the booking number, they'll credit my bank account today (as I used a debit card), and I'm free to shop around. I took the refund and shopped around, and got a crossing about the same time, but for twice the price, but as we had only paid £30, and the new crossing is £65, just before Christmas, I'm not too dissapointed. The talk of those who should know, is Sea France have too much by way of fleet, staff, and facilities, and will resume in one form or another within six months, either under new ownership or a reduced service with temporary government backing. In summary though, book elsewhere and get your money while you can!
  8. I thought on VWs that when you change the timing belt, you had to change the water pump as well?
  9. The downside with that is, it would have to be insured in the UK, and UK insurance will only cover you "abroad" for a certain amount of days (31 usually). As an example, someone I know in our area brought their Pajero from the UK, which wqas originally a Japanese import. He only had to change all the lights (rears as well) for Shogun lights, these had the EU stamp. The brakes and exhaust passed. Me and the Mazda MX5 ? Change the headlights fo LHD market, fit a fog light (rear lights were acceptable apprently). Rear brakes were accepted, the fronts meant new discs, new hub carriers (to hold the calipers in the right place!!) plus sundry other bits, hence why I didn't bother. 
  10. I tried to get my Mazda Eunos (MX5) into France. Gave up after a year. A lot of Japanese market cars differ from those sold to the UK market. For example, the lower speed limits in Japan meant my Eunos had smaller brakes, which were unacceptable for the European market. The cost of the mod's meant it wasn't worth it. I can't comment on the Surf!
  11. I'm going from memory, but I think as it's trying to boot, press F2, and that gets you into the dos menu to run a disc check which should give the option to repair/restore. I think!

Just to add to this, most modern diesels have EGR valves, which can also become gummed up through a lot of low rev, short distance stuff.  It's a bugger to get out, and needs cleaning with aerosol carb cleaner like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWNO0KX_xHM A better way is to once every 5000 miles odd, add Redex diesel system cleaner, half a bottle to a full tank. I did this in a friends older car, and an hour later, a bit of a pop, puff of smoke, and it's been going like a train since!!!
  14. Of course, as this mark covers quite a large area of the pool bottom, both shallow and deep ends, and curiously the heaviset patch follows the "crease" as the pool deepens but only on one side (!!), I would need a very very big bucket!
  15. Cheers for that. Never used liquid Javal, so that will be new!  Just to cap it all, someone knicked the pool alarm the day we left!
  16. As usual, things got away frm us, and although we left on time, it was still a rush! Anyway I trid one samll chlorine galet and one Vit C galet direct to the stain, and niether had any effect!
  17. Just did a "dusk" test, Chlorine very up, ph very down. I'll let you know if things change, if not I'll put a sample (the pool, not me) in a plastic test pot!

Got the water blue very quickly, but the filter was very very dirty, so the water was cloudy, so just poor filtration, flushed the sand filter, lots of backwashes, and I suspect there was a lot of debris (flies, blossom, leaves etc) and all is fine. Levels are all ok (according to my domestic testing kit), the stain looks exactly like it did before we left 3 months ago. I felt certain it was Tanning stains, but I'm going to do a further test in a minute, then we go back to the UK Friday!!
  19. Bumping my owm thread! Got back after the three months, have taken two weeks to get the water clear, and guess what, the brown stain is still there, in the same places and no worse, but no better. Looks like someone has scattered brown sugar into the pool and it hasn't disolved. Hoovered, brushed etc etc, just the same as it was, weird and annoying!

  22. I feel I need to know the location of the grease trap for our fosse. The actual 'tank' is buried just by the front of the house, under the drive/parking area, with the breather pipe sufacing some 30 feet away the other side of the drive. I can only assume the grease trap is buried (the tank is under gravel, which is on top of railway sleepers, so not easy to access) along side the tank, or could it be elsewhere???
