  1. Just been looking at the link you gave me Val - OMG I couldn't drag myself away! When you see the numbers of puppies and breeders advertising dogs for breeding it makes me quake and realise the enormity of the disaster scenario for dogs in this country! And that was just on the Teckel pages! Puppies and puppies and puppies and heaven only knows how they end up - some of the pictures leave you in no doubt as to the lives that await them. Makes me want to throw in the towel and set fire to all hunters in this country (and Spain etc) and the B breeders as well.... I wish I hadn't looked. But too many people shut their eyes to it all ..... so we can't give up!
  2. If any of you know of a little boy Teckel please let me know. I have an English lady with a little female dog who has just lost her lifelong companion Jack Russell who was 22! She's pining for a friend and her owner would love to have a Teckel as she loves the characters of this breed. I know what she means as I have one but she can't have him as we love him too much to part with!
  3. I dare not get on my soap box about this - but believe me when I tell you that the biggest names (and I DO MEAN the biggest names) put some vile things in - unbelievable minced up detritis (animal corpses) and then they coat the finished article in greasy oil to make the kibble palatable! If you use your hands to serve out the kibble, see how it all coats your skin.... Please don't challenge me on this as I know there will be many of you who think I'm talking rubbish and how can it be allowed etc etc. That's why I'm not keen to start - the information is all out there on the net, you just have to look and it names and shames. One of our rescued puppies was horribly ill when we fed her Royal Canine..... which was why I started to research what I was feeding the dogs - we nearly lost her and it was entirely due to the food! The dog food industry is BIG business and despite appearing to have a variety of different foods - most of the names are in fact under the huge umbrella of just a handful of the giant manufacturers. So, Hills is made by someone else for instance and the marketing and pricing designed to make you think it's top notch stuff. All the vets get kick backs for stocking it and only the few will actually give you the honest truth about the food if they have bothered to actually investigate it and ask the right questions. A dog's diet should be varied and understood - too many people just stick a bowl full of kibble down every day for the dog's entire life and nothing else - dogs were never made to eat kibble anyway! Before there is a hue and cry on this post, I KNOW it's not always possible to vary a pet's food and yes hundreds of dogs live health energetic lives on such a regime - but plenty don't....
  4. This is good information Val_2. For many years I have tried to persuade people to spend a little more on a good dog food because it makes sense and there are some very alarming articles that expose manufacturers' ruthless ingredients that can actually kill your dogs! I start to sound like a crank so try to keep my research to myself and just tell people who ask me. This is why I posted the link to the site above where I get my dog food from, delivered to my door with a good discount for multiple orders (yes ok I have 10 dogs so my order attracts 30% discount) but all the brands from these people come from the UK and are healthy, hypoallergenic, safe and top quality ingredients. All my dogs are rescues and arrived in pretty dire condition with some chronic conditions - they ALL recovered within weeks with good food and certain supplements. I am sorry that it's false economy buying from supermarkets here in France as most of it is utter rubbish and will not be good for your dog. Back in the UK supermarkets have a much better range of tinned dog foods - still not brilliant contents in my opinion but far superior to here! Be watchful of what you feed your dogs - economy is not always the result when vet bills kick in!
  5. You know I can't work this out - the link from photobucket looks fine in the preview, just as it should, but when I post it....... it all goes to hell?? Well the link to my page is fine and shows these two dears and gives contact details if anyone can help. I would really like to help these two and their owner so I hope one of you out there can come to their rescue. Their current host family cannot keep them any longer........
  6. Hi - does anyone feel able to give these two very cute Dachshunds a safe home till January? The link to pictures is here in case I can't get pictures to download!

Their owner is a lovely lady who has cared for many animals in the past and is now struggling to keep her precious two here - so I will help with their keep if someone is prepared to look after them because I just have no room!
  7. Time to close this thread now. Sadly little old Pip died peacefully in my arms last Friday. He had a bad night and hadn't wanted to eat much on Thursday evening. I sat up with him but he was restless and slept in fits and starts and then had a small stroke just after dawn which left him unable to walk properly. I took him to the vet first thing, he was calm and in no pain. The vet agreed that it was time to let him go and said he was, in his estimate at least 18 years old! Little boy licked my cheek as the sedative took hold and I whispered to him and he gave a big sigh...... I brought him home to be with the other two under the apple trees in the orchard in the sun. He had love and dignity at his end and if there is a doggie heaven then I hope he's with my other treasures who went before him. Feeling very sad :((((
  8. Stuff like this makes me so angry and I despair - we all know it goes on all over the world but some days I find it so hard to deal with it without getting so very depressed about my fellow man and woman in particular - we are supposed to be the nurturing sex for heavens sake!!! It beggars belief - I am so glad that these poor creatures were safely rescued.
  9. I havePhillip Pook, 48, from Ogmore-by-Sea in the Vale of Glamorgan, was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs for using a battery-operated collar to train his pet border collie.

The collars, which were banned in Wales last year but are still legal in other parts of Britain, give the animal an electric shock when it strays beyond designated boundaries. About 500,000 British dog owners use the device.

The Kennel Club welcomed the prosecution. A spokesman said: “Electric shock collars train dogs through pain and fear.

“They are a cruel, outdated and unsuitable method of training dogs.”

A spokesman for the RSPCA said Mr Pook had been “very bloody minded”. He said: “This has got to be the most expensive dog collar ever – he’s paid £3,000 for it. He was using the collar because he was too lazy to put up a fence.

“Electric collars have now been outlawed in Wales and there’s no excuse for using them. I am under no doubt this would have caused the dog pain.”

Magistrates at Bridgend were told that the collar gave an electric shock to Mr Pook’s dog, Dougie, when it went near a specific fence to escape from his home.

A young couple found Mr Pook’s collie, wearing the illegal collar, roaming a beach near his home in Ogmore-by-Sea.

They handed the collie over to the Dogs Trust charity, who traced the owner through a microchip.

David Prosser, prosecuting, said: “This is the first prosecution under the regulations for this type of collar. It operates like an electric fence, and if the dog approaches the boundaries or tries to escape it sends a shock. He didn’t accept that it was illegal because it’s legal in England. But this is the law as far as Wales is concerned.”

Magistrates were told the dog ignored the shocks and kept on escaping. It was known at a local kennels as “the dog with the shock collar”.

Mr Pook admitted the offence but claimed he didn’t know the collars had been made illegal. Electric shock collars, which are used to train unruly cats and dogs, were banned by the Welsh Assembly last March. The collars are still legal in England and Scotland. However, their legality is due to be debated in Parliament at Westminster and in Scotland.

The Electronic Collars Manufacturers Association has denied that use of such collars is painful to dogs.

On its website, the organisation says: “Mild static stimulation that your dog feels [is] designed to be undesirable so your dog will avoid it, yet is totally harmless and humane.”

The association said dogs learned in “small stages”, and therefore it takes an average 10 minutes twice a day for two weeks for a dog to be trained wearing an electronic collar.

The Welsh regulation prohibits the use of any electronic collar designed to give a dog or cat an electric shock. Owners caught using the device face a fine of up to £20,000 or six months in prison.

  10. Hi Pads - no he drinks lots as there are three water bowls at various points in the house and another two outside which he finds and uses regularly, but in any case I always make sure I pop him in front of a bowl several times a day and he does always drink. He's not miserable I have to say and has a voice when I put him in his cage to rest and he thinks it's not time for a rest..... cheeky monkey has quite a loud bark and he always gets his own way! I really do think that he's getting the best out of life at the moment despite me fretting - he travels around all over the house and gardens and then just flops when he's had enough and I go and find him and pop him in bed!
