1. Sorry cant help with support in France. I had a cochlear implant in Feb 2007, it took about 2 years from referral to surgery, lots of hospital visits (London) and tests. For me,it works well, lovely to hear all the sounds that you dont realise have disappeared (birds singing, raindrops, running water etc). My implant doesnt have rechargable batteries and it uses 3 batteries every 4 days, so that would be an expense to consider in France if you didnt have rechargeables, Free on the NHS. Good luck with your assessment, brings back memories
2. We are going to our house in Limousin and fancy a few nights down in the dordogne. Love staying in ~B&bs, found a lovely chateau near Brantome for one night, but cant find someone to do one night between Sarlat and Beaulieu sur Dordogne, either full or wont do one night - maybe have to book into a hotel - anyone have aany recommendations - pm please
3. The olympic fiasco just keeps getting better and better, glad Im off to France, cant wait. Waiting to see how long an opticians in town has the 5 rings in their window. We will be paying for this for years to come, bet Paris are glad now they didnt get them.
4. I do hope hubby gets on well with his hearing aids. Ihad high frequency heaing loss diagnosed in the late 80's,unfortunately then hearing aids could not help me,by the time digital aids were available my hearing had deteriorated so much I was virtually deaf. In 2007 I had a cochlear implant in my right ear and it changed my life,it was very hard trying to talk to my french neighbours by lipreading, now I can hear them and they correct my pronounciations...Im surprised they every understood me at all before. One in Seven people have a hearing loss of some sort, often its an unseen disability.. very trying for the sufferer and their family.
5. I know you have said he is a big bloke, couldnt your friend join some sort of class and learn some self-defence, arent there certain parts of the body, that can render someone helpless - a good kick in the goolies would be one.
6. Maybe kids should have 'life classes' and learn things like:- How bank accounts work, budgeting, how mortgages work, how to write a cheque. How to sew a button, cook eggs, add up without a calculator. How to hold a decent conversation. I suppose everyone is expected to have internet access to youtube. My hubby works on building sites and always beats his colleagues with his brain against their calculators
7. Been reading your countdown. Hope your move goes without a hitch and you enjoy your new life in France. I remember the same feeling back in 2005, when we set out on what we hoped would be the next part on our life journey, unfortunately we had to return to UK, but fortunate to be able to keep our french haven in the hope that when the time is right for us we can return. Wishing you best wishes for the future
8. I agree with your last post,Paul. In the OP's original post she says:- '(I normally have her attached but she needed to run) What was so different this day?? If she is normally attached, she should have been, surely the owner dictates to the dog not the other way around. OP then goes on to say:- I just said to her, Madame my dog loves people, unlike you,my dog is kind, unlike you. Surely you should have said:- Im so sorry, but she just loves people then re-attached her to the lead and gone on walk. In my earlier post, I just tried to point out that some people just dont like dogs and feel that other people should keep them under control, which is only fair, also have you considered that she may have thought your dog was going to p*** up her gate, even though she didnt, another not very nice thing if you dont have/like dogs.
9. We have fantastic garage near us, when I arrived in France, after leaving the car garaged for several months, upon first starting it, petrol dripped underneath,I drove it to the garage followed by a friend, the owner said leave it here with me and I will look at it this afternoon, telephone later. Later that day, I telephoned... car ready...35 euros.
10. my hairdresser gives me a head massage...........sooooooo relaxing, sends me to sleep lol
11. my husband doesnt like dogs,so he would not have liked a dog off its lead coming up to him. Regardless of how friendly your dog is, you cant expect everyone to like him/her. We certainly would not like someones dog coming onto our land
12. It is probably out of date by now, they changed the cle to pay as you go (ie by mobicarte). I wouldnt bother, I cant get mine to work, tried installing it on the laptop and it just wont install. I believe others on here have had problems too
13. Sorry to hear that you have lost a close friend. We have just returned from our house, our neighbour there died on Monday and we returned home next day so no time to do anything, we too were wondering what we would have done had we been there as we had been invited to the funeral which was yesterday - very quick considering the easter bank holiday
14. Mine are the same 5pm both sitting beside the food cupboard.
15.
B****y typical - they have gone past my front door (well, not quite but you know what I mean) and I'm in Suffolk watching my best friend of almost 50 years dying of cancer. But I'd rather be here. Go, Paul Weller, go (and the rest of the Sky team of course). John
Dont envy you that... had to sit and watch mum, dad, younger brother and three aunts.,all lose their fights with cancer.... chin up and remember the good times
16. Many thanks for everyones input - much appreciated
17. Perfectly, thank you. Has anyone under AE started to pay their business tax yet? Cant seem to find out percentages/amounts anywhere
18. With an empty van going back and forth to the UK several times a year, bringing stuff back to sell seemed a good idea be it food or DIY stuff, but probably more success as you say with DIY stuff - more reseach Thankyou
19. I suppose AE is more suited to B&B or rentals or maybe not??
20. yes of course, thank you cooperlola and Albert.
21. On the contrary, all research/knowledge is invaluable. Another question: if you do purchase items in uk in sterling and then sell in france, how would you go about showing those invoices for taxation purposes, say under AE regime Thanks everyone for your input
22. surely there must be some paperwork, to be completed or are you saying we could buy a crate of baked beans, take them to France and sell them legally??
23. thank you WB - hopefully they maybe on the forum and can help re: import taxes. Obviously VAT would be paid in UK.
